What diameter chain should I be going for? Going to convert the SW to canvas and need some chain, so going to order some galvanised. 4mm x19/20mm long (internally) feels about right and with a decent strength. I've got some inner tube for the chain sleeves so will use that.

I would try and find some original ones as they would have the correct fittings.

YRM Solutions check website.
Can't find any chains. Was going to order their number plate brackets bits its smaller than the number plate. Called them and they could do it at double the price plus P&P would have been near £30 so bought an angled piece of aluminium (1m long) for less than half that.

Don't really want to pay nearly £50 for 2 old chains.

When I converted mine to a soft top I just got some galvanised chain from local hardware store. I had the fixing off so I took the tub fitting with me and made sure it was large enough for the pin to go through. The pig tails are a little wider so the end link for them had to be made a little bigger. I know it is not perfect but it was only a couple of pounds and like you I was unwilling to spend big money on some old chains. I will measure the diameter for you at lunch time. But I think you need a long link chain rather than the standard chain you have linked other wise there is not enough space to fit the into the pigtail or fixing without fouling on the next link.

Thanks. I've got the pigtails and the mussel shaped bits for inside but not the cotter pin yet. Its hard to tell the chain lengths on the web unless they specify in te detail. Maybe a trip to B&Q is in order to get an idea. I'm a day or so away from ordering the canvas and hoops (in contact with 2 suppliers) as I've given up on 2nd hand as they are going for too much money and not far off new prices and there are very few with ALL the parts required to do it. I'm at £350 for a full set of galvanised hoops (most of the 2nd hand ones are going for £230-250) and around £330-340 for the canvas (with side windows) but I've asked for roll up sections internally to cover the windows (mainly to keep the dog cool if we get any decent weather).

On my series 3 chains are 600 mm long, links of 3mm steel and each link is 8mm across internal at narrowest point to fit over pig tails.

There are some folk having a giraffe with some landy spares prices these days.

Only concern is there is no breaking weight:

Why do you need a loading weight. Surely the tailgate is never going to have more weight than two people sitting on it, say 250kg to be very generous. Any welded steel chain will be more than capable of supporting that. Also if you are planning on heavy loading the tailgate I would be more worried about the bracket bolted to the thin aluminium tub being the weak link rather than the chain.

If it has a loading weight at least I have some confidence its not cheap steel/crap welds which isn't going to be up to the job.
