Since buying my 1990 RRC Vogue I've got everything working perfectly, except the tachometer, which has never worked.

Is it just as simple as removing the cluster and resoldering a wire or is it a deeper problem ?

thats if the wires are broken ?and do you mean trip meter ? i its digital wil be more to it than a bit of solder pop out the cluster and send it off to a specialist

No, not the trip meter.

I should probably have used the more common name of "rev counter", it's just that I was in the motor trade for years and used the technical name - tachometer.

It will depend on whether the needle mechanism's gone, or the actual 'rev-counter' in the engine. If it's easy to remove the cluster it should be fairly obvious if it's that that's not working - just test with a circuit metre.

try seeing if the wire is fitted to alternator from memory the terminal labelled w

Yep, see if you have a signal from the alternator before you rip the cluster out. could be the alternator has been swapped at some time for one that doesn't have the tachometer output.

I've just noticed in my wad of receipts the previous owner gave me there is one for a new alternator, so I expect that is the reason.

I'm not all that bothered to be honest. If the alternator is one which won't accept a tachometer then I'll just leave it.

Well looks like we got a tach again!

God knows how but since I disconnected the battery and reconnected it the tach has started working great.

If she wants to fix herself, I ain't going to complain.

Maybe she'll change her own oil too....
