If it's a 300tdi check the back of the alternator the wire that supplies the feed for the tacho some times comes lose try reseating it failing that maybe a faulty wire.

Mine did the same thing mate - i removed the wire and squirted the connection on the wire with wd40 and refitted it to the back of the alternator - job done!!
