Just ordered the Synergy 2 box after a full 2 days research on chips ,boxes and remaps. Most of my findings pointed to the Synergy box being the best option :) So i have ordered it today with the dash board switch and notified the insurance too! Sorted now just the wait to get the delivery then fit it:eek:

Update to follow.. TD4 AUTO( just more torque please)

Kev

Hi Kev,

I got to be honest I don't know why you need a synergy with the weight of caravan you are pulling. I'm pulling 1600kg unloaded and find my 06 TD4 pulls it no problem at all. I just can't figure out the problems you are having ????

I fitted a Synergy 2e. Way better mpg but I haven't fiddled with the torque settings yet.

Maybe the MPG was as a result of the Pierbrgh MAF sensor I fitted to team up with the Synergy?

I have towed my 4 wheel caravan on low torque setting and no problem.

Thanks chaps well I am not sure on why is seemed to struggle with 1500kg weight. like I said about 21mpg towing. Not use to Land Rovers or Autos, but I had it in D and although it got to 60 without much fuss keeping it there at the sight of the slightest hill was never happening. Is there a computer on these to show the mpg or do I have to use the old fashioned way? It does seem reading other post that I should tow in sport mode
Also for interest at current fuel prices 1000 miles 85% towing and cost of £305 works out at around 23/24 mpg based on a price of £1.45 per litre

I have reviewed the synergy box and will be blanking the egr too. it's more performance I need dont mind the cost if I get somethibg in return:cool:

Your fuel consumption is about right for towing a caravan plus it's an auto which will use slightly more fuel than a manual. Hills can be a problem and I know all about hills living in South Wales, but they can be a problem with any vehicle, in my case it's dropping down a gear at the right moment makes a difference. I'm not sure with an auto but I think you have to select 3rd gear in that situation. Some body here will correct that if I'm wrong.

u wont be disappointed with the synergy box

hope u dont think im being rude but have u done the egr bypass, crankcase filter etc,

ive got a 3 door td4 auto and must admit since doing these mods it pulled very well and have got 177,000 on the clock

Not yet Gary only had the LR two weeks lovely thing, mint condition. Gonna fit the synergy 2 then bypass the egr but I'll admit I will need help :) nudge nudge !
I'll need to know what to buy exactly for the egr

Kev

ive got the bmw engine and fitted the bmw crankcase filter conversion , also there is a filter at the back of the engine near the maf sensor, on the lhs tucked near the bulkhead

got my synergy set on no 2

no probs and will help where i can , lol

Hi Kev,

As Gary says the EGR blank, and the crank case filter will make a big difference also a good service will be an improvement. When your ready to do the mods there is lots of information on the forum already with lots of good advice.

Do you know if the car has had a service recently ??? Another thing I would check is the turbo hoses, sometime they get a little split in them resulting in power loss.

Here's the link for the EGR blank mod, bit long but a good read.

Hi there Kev,

I've done all the mods you intend doing.

I've the Synergy2a set on 8 for max torque and medium power.

That's with the Pierburg MAF of course - if you stay with the original Bosch MAF then the equivalent setting will be number 3.

According to Ron's info, which I agree with, the extra power settings would only help with more HP at over 3000rpm - so that for towing is a waste of time.

I tow a big non-aerodynamic trailer with my auto-box 2004 Freelander which has now done 112K miles with no problem. Usually loaded to around 1600kg although the trailer is plated at 2tonne max gross.

I should really fit a roof-spoiler as it's the wind resistance more than the weight that I feel.

Running legal at 60mph I can get 26 or 27mpg - but long hills a bu**er. For example on the M6 from junctions 35 or 36 heading north to Carlisle I let the speed drop to around 55 and can make steady progress - even passing caravans with lesser capable towing vehicles.

Without the trailer I get over 36mpg - even fully loaded with a roof box. With just 2 people on board and no roof box I can easily achieve over 40mpg.

My present auto with a synergy gives more mpg than my previous manual did without a synergy.

I keep the auto-box in normal drive - not sport mode - otherwise the box hangs on to lower gears much too long for me.

Hope that helps you.

Are you also getting the new Pierburg MAF with the Synergy, if you are then 6 is the minimum setting as recommended by Rover Ron. 1 to 5 for the original Bosch MAF and 6 to 10 for the Pierburg. Just noticed yesterday that the red and green lights aren't working on my in cab switch, hoping it may be a loose connection or it will have to go back to Rover Ron under warranty.

Nick,
I had that problem with the in-cab switch too - the little jack-plug is easily dislodged.
I fixed it simply by using a rubber band to keep it in place.

Great imformation chaps ;) is the synergy easy to fit ? I have been looking at the egr thread and there is a great discription on there. Ordered the egr bypass just now. When not if I get stuck I shall be asking for help . But I feel like any forum I have ever been part of help is never far away :amen::amen:

Kev :kiss::kiss:

The fitting instructions that will come with the synergy are very simple and easy.

In fact the most difficult thing to do is to refit the air-cleaner cover, which has to come off to access the MAF plug.

Once you get the knack of lining up the cover - that's easy too.

Rover Ron even includes the long-reach Allan-Key you need to access the 3 captive machine-screws on the rear of the cover.

Thanks Singvogel will give it a try. Rover Ron also supplies the security bit for the new Pierburg MAF when supplied as part of the kit.

Not ordered the new MAF to be honest it wasnt even mentioned. However I will be doing the other mods though.

Gratefull as ever :):)

I didn't think I needed a new MAF at all - until I did the test of disconnecting it.

I immediately felt that the car performed better - i.e. on default settings.

When I got the new Pierburg MAF I tried it with the Synergy set up to 'compensate' the new MAF but with the tuning section off. Sure enough the new MAF alone gave better results, proving that the old Bosch one had so deteriorated over time that I had not noticed the gradual loss of performance.

Switching on the Synergy box itself gave an outstanding increase in torque and acceleration from low revs.

I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results.

Several folks have been disappointed with little or no mpg improvement, but I think that the extra performance encourages it's use.

I think if I drove at the same gentle level as before I would achieve even better fuel savings.

A Freelander will never be a 'sportscar' but the synergy improvement changes it's performance from merely 'adequate' to powerful enough to satisfy most folks., and surprise a few owners of some much more expensive machinery.

Many thanks Singvogel

Perhaps I should have looked under the bonnet first because, as you say, the plug had come out. Modified it with your patented elastic band and now works a treat :)

Yup - if you need high-tech avionic-level modifications look no further. ;) Ha ha.

just getting a bit confused about the red and green leds, etc then the maf compensator

am trying to pin down and how to test the relevent things to ensure i can get the max mpg out of it,

thks again and apologies if ive stepped into this post
