Hi,just been chatting to a landy mate. We were talking about either using oil or grease in the swivel pin housing's ? and the advantage or disadvantage of both [ie, oil reaches all parts as it gets thrown around housing etc]. Just wonderd if other folks had any preference? :). thanks for any views given.

disco.s 300 tdi has not got drain off plugs oles unlike the 200 tdi,s , so its in and out with the same ole but saying that depends on what year you got !!!

There is no advantage/disadvantage they both lubricate although with grease filled swivels they are maintence free.

If the swivel does not have a drain plug then it's filled with grease. All oil filled swivels have a drain plug but some don't have a level plug.

We got a 94 300 tdi, that has level and drain plugs but as it happens filling up with grease tomorrow, one shot here we go lol.

I take it you use a very thin grease then? Just curious really as I don't know any different.

One-shot grease (preferably with plastic pipe), turn wheel outwards, undo filler plug and squeeze it in. Sometimes helps to try and heat it up a wee bit in a bowl of hot water;)

I think it's a mix of ep80 and moly grease, so thicker than oil and thinner than normal grease.

Defiantly the one shot grease. Land rover realised that oil was a crap idea after a while and now recommend grease.

Defiantly the one shot grease. Land rover realised that they couldn't make housings to hold oil in after a while and recommended grease instead.

They are currently working on introducing grease to the gearbox, transfer box and diffs, with a waterproof grease for the sunroofs

Edited for accuracy.:D:D

Nice one folks ;).We came to the conclusion that one shot works well enough as it is a thin grease mix its runny . Thanks for the replies. have a good en:D.

The one shot grease is whats known as a thixotropic grease.
When left alone it goes thick, when agitated and warmed it goes liquid.

I have a sticker on my 300TDI that says that grease has been used on 'this side of the vehicle'

But there's no sticker on the other side. Would they only do one side?? Weird!!

The introduction of one shot grease was at the same time as teflon instead of chrome was used on swivels was it not?

just used it on mine with new seals. No drips no oil all over my tyres, great stuff. alittle thick ehrn cold, but leave in this weekend's sun for 5 minutes and pours in lovely
