Hi all,

Thanks in advance for the attention.

I recently was trying to change the grease on my swivel (since the car was 7 years without running) and noticed I don't have drain and level plug.

After some research I found out that Land Rover changed the swivels in 1997 and It's supposed to use one shot grease and it goes to the "level".

However, I added some grease and it came out of the fill plug, so I still have the old grease there after all these years.

I have tried to take out grease with a seringe and a hose but it's not possible.

My main issue here, is that I want to take the old grease out and replace it with a new one. How am I supposed to do that without the drain plug?

Do you guys have any ideas? Should I stick with the old grease and just top off a bit?

Thank you very much.

You can't without stripping it all down.
You need to turn the wheel to full lock to squirt some grease in, take the plug out turn the wheel and the hole will become open as the swivel is out of the way.

Remove the swivel seal and let grease drip out. Refit seal and fill with new grease. Make sure to turn the wheels so new grease passes the goes into the swivel and not on top of it.

Of course the risk being the seal fails and then you have to strip it all out.

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

I dont feel confident taking out the seal beccause since it's been this much time probably it will fail.

After some research I ended up finding this Video

I ended up topping up the swivel and with a zip tie tried to check more or less the level.

I will run a few kilometers with the car and them recheck again how the level is.

Thank you once again for your help.

Safe travels in your Land Rovers!

If you have grease in the steering swivels the you will have Teflon coated swivel balls, if the balls are chrome then they will have fill and drain plugs plus early swivels also had a level plug as fitted to my old RR 1987 so the oil could be replaced at the service interval.

My 1997 D1 has grease and Teflon balls and so are sealed for life, so it’s only when the swivel is stripped down and repaired the grease will be replaced as the no fill, drain or level plugs.

In the 27 years with my disco its never had any issues with swivels, so grease works unlike the RR chrome swivels that leaked, leaked until I put a few shots of normal grease from my grease gun in via the fill, a tip I was given back then and it worked.
