Hello all ..

a little follow on from my bk door post , I have decided to get the weight of the spare off the bk door , think one of these swing away's would be a good idea ...?

which ones are good , which are bad ? , are the brit-part one awful ?? are the Raptor ones worth the extra money ??

has any of you guys fitted one , ant tips or hints , and which did you buy ... ?

I will be fitting it to my defender 110 td5 , 98 if that makes any diff ....

I bought a Mantec swing away, well build and easy to fit. The only reservation is the daft tubular slider that anchors the thing to the back door. Either way I'm chuffed I got that big heavy tyre of the flimsy framed rear door.
 
Britpart one been on my 90 for a few years now, and it was 2nd hand off of my mate who had it on his 90.
All the paint/coating is still on it.
It does not rattle, it used to, but I cannot remember what I did to stop it, but it would have been simple/cheap, as I am tight!
It has grease nipples.
Fiddly fcuk getting the backing plate into the rear xmember for the bolts to screw into.
 
I keep looking at the raptor swing away , these look to be HD , wondering if anyone has fitted one , If they are worth the extra money over one of the cheaper brit-part one ..

The raptor looks nice, but I have a few reservations,
1, the top and bottom rose joints are totally reliant on that bolt staying tight, and the plates the bolt passes through not twisting
2, that little rose jointed rod that connects the carrier to the door does not look to heavy duty, again single bolt either end through a single plate.
On the plus side the xmember plate looks quite substantial where it bolts on.

The Britpart one,
1, the pivot bolts have a plate top and bottom so cannot wring/twist even if they come loose
2, the door connection is much more substantial.

Never thought I would praise britpart!
 
one of the other things I need to consider , is that I sometimes use a motorcycle ( trials bike) dave cooper rack fitted to my tow bar , I was wondering if the wheel would stand more proud from the back with the use of a swing away ?

If the back wheel sits further back away from the door , it might prevent me fitting my bike on the rack ....
 
You can fit a tow ball spacer which may be enough to compensate for the wheel being a bit further out.

My tyre touched the door skin, and i had to pack the studs out with washers for it to clear,not many 3 or 4 Iirc, so if you had door mounted spare before, you wont have an issue
 
This is Mantec on mine - iirc the spare wheel sits very close to the tow ball when I put my boat trailer on though I'm confident my Thule tow ball bike rack still fits well.

That's the downside with mine. I think it has some really poor plasticote which will undoubtedly crack and rust in time.

Well, it might be hard to get paint to stick to it, but at least when it flakes off all you can see is zinc, rather than a uniform finish of ferrous oxide to blend in with the rest of the Land Rover. I have an auxiliary fuel tank that goes under the rear wing, which I fitted around the same time, and the brackets for that rust amazingly quickly. They make the Land Rover chassis look quite durable by comparison.
 
I’m not sure if I’d get the clearance , I don’t think a spacer would work as there is a lot of weight on it .. when the bike is on the bk it’s pretty close to the spare wheel

I might have to pass on the swing away
