bummer on the lights but should be an easy fix. lights can be so annoying you check them before you set off and a bulb goes on the way to the centre :d

happened to my lad the other week, indicators fine at home, one out on the test.

test centre does seem thorough not looking forward to my first under the new regime.

you could always take the centre seat out for the retest

Yeah, does happen. I had a Civic a few years back, blew both brake light bulbs on the way to the test centre; nothing ever went wrong others in the 5+ years of ownership. It's like they "know"...

I've just realised I've been working flat out to get all these bits and pieces sorted I haven't taken any pictures for you lot. :(

I've fitted new TLS shoes, cylinders and drums across the front axle. Its removed the pull but she's lacking any bite power to the brakes. I think they need a further bleed & adjustment. I've just discovered the adjust pads right off technique to bleeding so will give that a go.

Centre seat belt fitted - This was straight forward

Steering realigned - this was a bit of a job, I couldn't get the steering box drop arm off even though the nut wasn't done up so tight. Fortunately that was in a pretty good place to start with.

Fog tell light sorted - dodgy bulb

Nipped up the clutch pipe -quite tight now, its a steel pipe.

Tightened the rear shackle bolts FT so they take up the nylock. I've realised the kit comes with very slightly varying length bolts and I've put the longest ones on the front of the front shackles which now show excess thread from the nut. I'll swap these round but its a bit of a faff as mu jack is rubbish and you need to jack the chassis, not the axles, up. I'll get to this in good time. I'm not worries about the bolts coming out as they are wound through the inner shackle plates.
Gave her a good wash.

Pre wash - nice to see the old girl outside for once! :)

This is an inspirational post, well done!
Could you please take some pictures of your seatbelt installation, I've just got round to fitting my inertia belts, but had to take out the inertia (or indeed any) centre strap as it was fowling on the seat bases.

Thanks
Ashley

I can upload these photos for you now, Ijust hope they are still relevant.

Thanks for the info, it's the centre belt fixing that I am most interested in. I've currently removed mine as it was getting in the way. I may need to remove the seat for an mot by the sounds of it!

Ah ok. I've just fitted a centre lap belt, much the same that pictured but the reel is mounted down the side of the seat, on the same mounting point as the drivers clasp in fact.

Thanks,

it seems you have some special fittings for the inertia parts - or perhaps these were modified from a 90/110 defender. I'll have to take a look, they are rather neat!

The new belts come with an assortment of fittings, I've got a load left, let me know if you need anything in particular.

So, re-test tomorrow morning!

I've had another go at getting a good pedal, another round of bleeding and adjustment. Bit of a faff as one of the front snail cams wasnt working properly so... strip it dow...again.... Got what feels like a good pedal now but will need to take her out for a run to be sure. New shoes all round now so no doubt a bit of bedding in is required for a good bite.

However, if its not one thing, its another... the rears now bind in reverse, not badly but a bit. I think this might also resolve itself with a bit of bedding in. If now I'll have to put a further chamfer on the trailing shoe.

One thing I did discover giving it a wash is that it leaks like a sieve. I think I'll spend the next four years sorting all the leaks out.

Anyway, wish me luck!

Whay He's on the road!

last on the road in 2007, 4 years of rebuild, 2 location moves, one wedding, one daughter and about five and a half grand later...:cool:

Took the Mrs and the little one to a country pub a few villages over, just because. Hopefully lots more odd days out to come and a bit of TYRO/RTV in the future.

I thought getting the MOT sorted would be the end but its actually just the start; retrim & fit the defender seats and smaller steering wheel, sort the leaks, fit out the back for some sort of camper / day van use, electronic ignition...

Thanks for everyones advice and encouragement; couldn't have done it without you. ;)

whoo hoo, excellent news, you must be feeling pretty good seeing your efforts come to fruition

but its true, the journey to enlightenment never ends :D

Well said @suburban ... the journey continues...

Over the last few fire ups, the starter motor has been getting slower and he's harder to start. Jumping in to get him going today and I get the dreaded "click".

So, I've checked the battery as best I can single handed; it was given the all clear a few months ago by a battery centre so I'm reasonably confident its OK despite its age. Its putting out 12.95V before cranking and a trickle charge shows its full to.

I then checked the load bearing wiring, all connects were tight and I only recently cleaned the earths and did have good starting recently.

I then tested the starter by by-passing the vehicle wiring all together using jump leads (neg battery directly to starter, positive to the starter side of the solenoid). I got some very slow cranking and no fire up.

My assessment is the starter is shot, what do you think?

Assuming I'm right, I'm thinking one of these... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROV...+Rover&hash=item41a0944961:g:CVIAAOSwwE5WVW5B

Any thoughts welcomed.

:)

sounds like the starter, whenever I have done the jump leads from battery to starter it has always cranked as fast as normal

could try a battery from another car or one of those jump packs if you have one, which would rule your battery out

could try a tow start to see if everything fires up

How's the voltage on the battery?
Is the battery new?

The battery is old but passed a proper battery check not so long ago. I could get that checked again I suppose?

I know a tow start would fire him up ok.

I should have dried jumping him earlier when I was there. What a numpty.

So, just spent a week and a half flat on my back with a bad back...ideal.

Managed to get to Harry today t see what was wrong.

12.5v as he stood; a smidge low I suppose, 12.3v (from memory) on cranking but only a click to show for it. I'm thinking the battery is low and a good jump would get him going. no such luck.

14.7v coming out of the jump car, 13.3v at the + post on the starter, still just a click. I can only assume the starter is sharted itself. Ive ordered one of these

should be here mid week. I'll let you know how I get on...

New starter sorted it. Spinning over a good'un now. Great service from that link. Fingers crossed the starter has some longevity.:)
