^^Well said!
I do like the land rover, but would not be so blind as to discount other manufactuers. The Land Rover has its' strengths in its' easy to maintain basic mechanics (on older ones at least) and its' cheap and readily available parts. That is taken as a strength, and a reason to own one.
The japanese are far more reliable, by a country mile in terms of repairs - but the downside is, when something DOES go wrong you will pay through the nose! It may be once every few years - but it will hurt. To give an essence here, a part worth £15 on a landy, would have an equivilent cost on a jap of £250.
Having owned both, The shogun is better in 3500 form than the 3000. Very pokey, comfortable etc. That said, if you do need anything done to the engine, you WILL NOT be able to do yourself! These are very technical engines, and the 3500 is very tight on space. Roadside repairs are a no-go area.
Rust is a major problem with these - particularly rear chassis and floor. Watch for rust from fore of the rear wheels, all the way back. A pillars, rear door and Arches.- many cheap shoguns around with little MOT.
Other common failure is brake calipers seizing up. These are around £150-£200 each new, so make sure they are good and keep an eye on their movement - clean and grease the pins. Rear axles on imports CAN break on the weld - check axle welds regularly. Windscreen weak and prone to cracking (vibration) - these are £1200 each. MPG expect 15mpg around town - 20mpg on a run.
In my view, I would say keep the 300tdi - They really are the last of the EASILY maintainable Land Rovers. Parts are readily available, and you can self maintain it.
