hi im looking to get a landy freelander, changing from a impreza, not that that matters but anyway, whats the best model of the freelander 1 to get? for all round use, off road ,family and with a bit of speed behind her? cheers

Discovery is a poor mans RR classic its a lower spec'd model using cheaper parts. A RR classic is a refined road vehicle and offroder however a defender is a workhorse built for working offroad and on the road you can be a poor man or a rich man in a Defender. Defender 90 is best offroad if all are std because of its choice of tyre sizes and ground clearance.
 
I doubt you,ll find many " rich men " driving Defenders !

And not that many " poor men " can afford a Defender !.

Freelander is a car based offroader its not bad for what the are. They are known for electronic and mechanical faults Do lots of research before buying. Freelanders can be quite cheap because of the known faults with various models. Discoverys are the cheapest mainly because they are rot boxes as can be said of RR Classics and some defenders however Defenders hold their value because they have no real body shell to rot only a relativly easily replacable bulkhead and chassis. Defender is considered the best offroad vehicle std and is far less car like that a Discovery and the comfy RR Classic.

V8 now if you can genuinly afford to get 15 to 22Mpg running a V8 (Mabe as much as 28 on a run!) then you are a richer man tha I (not that hard). If you think fitting an LPG tank will be cost efective forget it! I have only ever seen 1 LPG kit that I would call decent and that was done years ago before they introduced LPG in garage forcourts. It will take you a fair ammount of time to recoup the initial cost of installation and poping AFM (If EFI) every now and then will add to the "cheap fuel" Tdi's hold the money as the engines are pretty bullet proof. I have seen an engine after 120K mies and the bores still had hatch markings in from the factory not worn at all (seen a few now). Very good reliable engine if kept serviced.
 
What Cars people drive mean nothing at all to do with their wallet or pay. A friend of mine spent his whole redundancy on a nice new car only to have it a couple of years it go wrong and then be sold off cheap. I know another guy on LZ that pops in occasionally has a plenty of money driving around in a sorted Discovery 200Tdi not hugly modified but modified correctly and sorted. No massively huge off road snorkel, tyres, all the gear and an plough/anchor hanging down behind it that is Oh Soo common these days. Its just sorted as it should be and does just fine for most things.
 
Notics how many "challenge trucks" have a defender tow hitch that hangs down 6 inches below the x member:doh: Or worse a dixon bate Aka Plough fitted!

no offence lads but really will not touch a dicso, my stepdad has killed 3 in 8 years, bad luck maybe but im not gonna take that chance, if i had the money to waste i would go for a defender 90 but like the look of the freelander just not sure clued up on the best model? cheers

Actually that's not true. Many estate owners own a Defender, simply because many of them have so much land and they need them to travel across it!

95 2000 uk. running at around 250bhp. only the baby version but a clean car, with 5zigen 3"exhause, jap speed 3" turbo downpipe etc etc, but fancied a change, was looking at the freelander td4? what are they like?

The best of the bunch imo. The TD4 has fewer problems than the 1.8 petrol K series engine and it's more refined than the older 2.0 L series diesel engines.

If you want a car that's suitable for the everyday drive, provides reasonable fuel economy, provides ample room and can handle mild to moderate off road conditions, then the Freelander isn't a bad choice. You just need to be aware of some of the most common faults. Many of the faults were ironed out or are at least thought to be less common in newer Freelander 1 models.

cheers for info. compared to subaru im sure fuel will be better, also can you change the front ie the bumper, grill,lights maybe bonnet, to make a 99/00 too look like a 2004 front end?
