Yes I was the one that bought it from ebay from Jan, and can confirm it was descried verbally as having a solid chassis that just needed wire brushing and coating. At this point in time I am sure Jan will be as surprised as I am, and will act in a responsible and professional manner when I contact him regarding the matter :eek: I will of course ask for a contribution towards the cost, the last thing I want is to progress the options available to a customer in these circumstances. Let's see how I get on tomorrow, I shall of course keep you all posted.

Could you guys give me an indication as to the likely cost to repair the chassis, just an estimate will do.

If you just want it plated £200 maybe ?

Doesn't look bad its just how long stripping, cutting, welding, grinding and painting takes
 
It will be far worse than it looks as its gone in unusual places.
£200-£250, double that If you do the x member though the chassis doesnt warrant a x member as It hasnt got long left as it will be thin in lots of places
 
Thanks guys, excellent advice, I will get the rest of the MOT issues and advisories sorted, then clean up and treat the metal bits of the chassis, finally ready for a bit of fabrication.

Yeah i'm not expecting too many years out of this chassis, so i'll start saving indeed. Hopefully I can get 2 years or so out of it.
 
Fair play to Jan. One hour after emailing him the scans of the MOT and pictures, he gave me the option of a full refund. Subsequently we agreed on a contribution towards the repairs. I still think at £3.5k for a 1998 300TDI it's good value.
 
As long as the area Surrounding your holes is in good Condition I see no propblem just depends how much its spread I'm sure there is a limit to any one plate being welded ??? Correct me if I wrong

I thought there was a limit say a quarter of the.chassis rail was rotten the. Said plate would not be strong enough unless whole section was cut out and replaced like for like ...,
 
Depends on how good the welder is at hiding it I suppose and how you were to repair it if you were to brace it and put overlapping flanges on etc but if that's the case a replacement part would be better IMO
