Grunt is right.... for maintenance a trolley or bottle jack is best.... but take into consideration the size of jack... My trolley jack has to be sat on a few thick planks just to be able to lift the axle, as if its on the ground it wont reach the axle at all.
 
i use an ex mod bottle jack fer mine, you can get em from allsorts of places, there is leavesley international thats in burton on trent, not too far from matlock, you could also try paddocks ;)

Been out and bought a trolly jack. The haynes manual says to jack the vehicle on the rear diff and use axel stands. is this necessary? (extra expense for axel stands) or can i jack the car somewhere else?

You can jack each corner as you need but there are a couple of safety points I like to use.

Don't crawl under the vehicle when its supported by a jack alone, you can use axle stands or big lumps of timber.

If you take a wheel off store it under the vehicle so that if the vehicl drops it'll land on the wheel and not the discs or yourself or whatever.

Always chock the wheels that are left on the ground to stop the vehicle rolling. Chock back and front of the wheel. More so with a Land Rover which has the handbrake on the prop shaft and not the rear wheels.
 
That sounds a bit pompous now that I've re-read it, sorry if I'm teaching Granny to suck eggs.
