Hi all
I have a 2000 defender 90, one of my rear shock absorbers has broken and i have started looking at replacing it. It seems that there is a huge range of choice from a £20 aftermarket part to £100's for uprated stuff like Terrafirma and Bilstein stuff.
I tend to use it for driving around the farm on bumpy farm tracks and into fields, however the kids like piling into the back of it and we go off for a day trip some where so ride comfort is important too.

has anyone got any tips or advice on what to get and whether i should perhaps change the coils while i am at it?

If you're happy with the ride fit the same as is on it already.
If the springs & the other shocks are the originals might well be an idea to replace them.

In my experience, you get what you pay for with shocks. I had TerraFirma which didn’t last very long before rusting heavily. Bilstein and Old Man Emu are very good but pricey, if you can afford the outlay. LR’s own shocks are a good compromise and given that they are fitted as standard, are worth a look. New shocks will transform the ride anyway.

I have just put a set of TerraFirma pro sport shocks on the rear axle and i have to say ride quality does seem a lot better, might be because i have been driving around with one broken shock for a while :(.
hopfully they dont rust @Knappster paint job looks good on them but time will tell! might swap the front once i have saved up again......
