i had a strange thumping/tapping noise coming from the front left of the block last year.
never knew for shaw what is was, in the end i suspected it to be the hydrolic lifter
(do we have them on 200dti)
some days it was there, some days not so..

more than a year later it still runs just fine.
what i do notice is on straight derv, i get one piston (injector caused ?) that rattles at low revs, say running in 4th at 30 mph, but put it in 5th or go faster - it goes.
and still goes, and goes......
203600 miles still going goes...
yesterday cruised oh so easily at 60mph down then up the A12 I was on..

I once bought one of those off the shelf tow bars from Halfords to tow my sister in law 5 miles - it broke after 3. She didnt help with her poor handling of the car though. Ever since, I've kept straps. I also now have an Ivor Williams flatbed trailer with ramps which I use for any recovery over a mile.

Going to purchase some decent recovery rope though. I understand that it may be illegal to tow any distance using a rope. Its only legal to recover a vehicle to the side of the road, or a layby, using a rope.

bought one of the 3 piece towing bars from machine mart, used it many times without any dramas.
when jobs done, just take it apart in 3 pieces, put it back in its bag and wait till its used again.
as its used with my ladies pin hitch one end, and towing eye on other - no problems..

as a backup, i got 3 different sets of ropes with differing lengths, but at worsed, can just link with industrial U bolts

Quick question however, The towing points on a disco 1 as standard are the 2 bars welded to the chassis rails either side at the front. These are the "wrong way around" for those kind of poles to work?

Could you, Use a shackle or something similar to bring it back the right way up?

The other thing I don't like personally is that you can't lock it on the dead vehicle (screw up connector like a carrabena)

News in from the mechanic.

Conrod failure. Just looking at how much it'd take to get it sorted out and a quote for it to be done.

Can anyone give me the PN for the conrods on a 300TDI? (Mr Martin i'm looking in your direction!) EDIT - Found it ERR2418 £50 are the beachmach ones ok? I've heard the name around here quite a bit? I'm hoping to find out later about the state of the bores and pistons.

If the engine is salvageable then it'll be getting re-shelled and re-used. else it's a new engine at £500 + fitting.....

sorry for slow reply been "busy"
yeh, those ends can be used in any of four positions.
with the towing eyes on cars I just lift the one third piece to clip it all in, then assemble the middle tube as I go.
abit head scratching at first, but you soon get used to it.
as you get a clunk on over run, I cut some strips of rubber mat to fit between the hook end of towbar and towing eye held in place with nylon cable tie - works a treat - nice and quiet then..

If I found any one thing wrong with the towing bar, its its length, could do with another couple of foot in it...
