I have a range rover l322 2008. 4.4l petrol V8. For the last year I have had a problem when I start acceleration at about 60kpm the revs are around 1500 and it surges between 1500 down to 1000rpm then up to 1800 once at 2000rpm the problem goes away. I had it to the shop and they cleaned the MAF sensor, the throttle body which made no difference. They now think it is the torque convertor. (OUCH) if I read up the symptoms are consistent with this diagnosis except for one thing. If I switch to mud mode and turn off HDC the problem goes away. Any ideas guy and girls

Hi there, one way to find out is to remove the oil pan from the bottom of the gearbox. There may be metal flakes present in the oil and the oil could smell burnt also. If there are metal flakes in the oil residue then the gearbox will need rebuilding.
The gearbox oil cooler will also need cleaning very thoroughly or replacing along with the gearbox oil cooler pipes.
I do hope this isn't the case.
It is possible that the mud mode on the gearbox changes the behavior of the gearbox.
Are there any odd noises from the gearbox around the bell housing area?

Thanks for the reply. There are no strange noise at all now I did have a bit of a squeak but it was a water pump failing. Noise gone since I changed the pump. Will check the gearbox if I don't get any more simple solutions. THANKS

I'm not surprised you have problems accelerating at 60 KPM.:DWelcome hope it's not an expensive fix.:)
