shocker

D1 300 auto 1998 . Usual sunroof issues , leaking lots now with this heavy rain . I had the rubber seal out of the rear one the other day , cleaned and reseated , blew air at the corners with the drains but was very pressed for time due to weather and had to get it back together and shut before really addressing it properly . There is mass water from the rear unit draining through roof lining where it kinks down and more through the front unit running out of the control box over the windscreen . This control is now non working so I will be opening the unit via allen key .

I have done searches and read the books and now think that I must dismantle each unit , clean , reseal to body , reseat seals , clear drain holes , check drain tube connection , blow tubes through and shut them never to be re opened . Putting holes in the roof of a car is a bloody silly idea anyway .

What I need clarification on -

where do drain tubes come detached ? Outside of unit tray ?

do I need to remove trays completely from outside ?

do I need to remove whole roof lining to access this and other parts ? Or can I get away with releasing lining around the back and sides ?

Where do the rear unit drain pipes come out ?

is there anything else I need to know before starting this job ? Other than having Sika type PU mastic and airline available ?

is there a step by step anywhere other than whats in the books and rave ?

thanks for peoples time reading this , this is an issue I have rarely bothered with but I have a high spec vehicle that I would like to keep this time so would like to solve this . As I say , I have searched and read the advice already given but there were a few points I was still unclear on .

yep, they attach to tubes at the front corner of the tray

I took the whole sunroof out, bit of a faf but mine were leaking from the seal where the sunroof meets the car roof

drop the whole lining its much easier

Where do the rear unit drain pipes come out ?
front ones down the A post rear run down rear corner ( D post ?? )

mine were leaking from every where they could including the plastec corner molding where the drain tube attache and from every bolt that was holding the drip tray on. to be honest it's not such a bad job and you'll have it done in a day... I wished I'd dome mine sooner rather then spen hrs and hrs with garra tape and tring to seal it from the outside... godd luck

Ok my answers as required to your questions:).

1 Drain tubes are a continous tube and don't come detached outside but detachable at the tray.

2 No, the tray drops down inside when detached from the outside frame it's then removed from the vehicle.

3 No, the head lining can be droped half way, it will fold a bit in the centre but will give you access for what is required.

4 Behind the mudflaps, look up underneath with a torch and you should see the ends.

5 Remove the glass first to make the frame lighter and u may loose or break a few head lining clips.

6 Loads of info in this forum and others on leaking sunroofs.

I've never had a problem as I don't use sunroofs, but my mate did so we removed his and resealed the frames to the body with silkaflex, cleaned every thing up etc regreased the runners took an easy half a sunny day to do each one we didn't rush with a few days in between that was two years ago and no probs since. Get the seals right then problem solved

After it's stoped raining if there's water still laying in the groove around the edge of the glass and has not drained away then that is a good indication that the glass seal is working and holding back the water.

Thanks guys . I may have blocked the rear drains as I have sprayed a lot of waxoyl underseal around after some welding ....I did find a black plastic tube clipped to the axle with a u bend at the end but given that if came from the centre of the vehicle I assumed it was a fuel tank or other breather . I blew down it and it was pretty solid , so I gave it a blast with the blow gun with little noticable effect. The LR workshop book gave the drains for the back sunroof as being at the rear of the tray . I blew a lot of compressed air around there with little visible effect as I had not time to dismantle the whole unit .

I dont use the damn things , I just want them to stop bloody leaking !

Any more , anyone ?

"The LR workshop book gave the drains for the back sunroof as being at the rear of the tray "
The book is wrong, they are at the front corners the same as the front sunroof.

That would be why I couldnt find them then ! The diagram shows them to the rear , I am looking at it now ....unless my rear sunroof has been re assembled arse about face , which is by no means impossible .

Thanks for clearing that up Dis . Just been out between showers looking at it and the N/S/R roof skin is flapping around , not fixed down to crossmember , so that will have buggered any seal between the unit and the roof .
