So my rattling engine has got much worse,
Really noisy at times, seems much worse after it sits in traffic,
Still not convinced it’s not internal within the engine,
A mechanic suggested to me that the oil pickup may be partly blocked, might be worth checking but how hard is it to get to? Is the sumo a nightmare to remove? Presumably I’ll need a new sump gasket,
Makes sense to do it now as it’s due an oil change so figured I’d do it tomorrow,
Anything to want h out for?
 
If you haven't taken it off before, be aware the sump is sloped. Might sound obvious but my very experienced mechanic pal covered himself in oil , being caught off guard by the slope . Honest we didn't laugh, ...................until we got all the stuff off him :D

P.s sump is easy to remove.Even I could do it.......almost did but let mechanic take last few bolts out :)
Addit: the usual suspects can tell you more technical things , but sometimes it's nice to remember the simplest slip ups :)

If your intention is to just replace the bearings make sure the crank journals are in good condition..

Has your mechanic been able to check the oil pressure?
 
It’s more a rattle than a knock, and cam speed not crank, I know a few on here have similar issues as did my previous td6, it’s been suggested that the top end is getting starved of oil especially on my very short slow speed commute, might as well give it a look as the oil needs swapping anyway, just not sure what I’m looking at really, is the pick up easy enough to remove and clean up?

It should be easy enough, if its a normal motor it'll be held with a small bolt ;)

clean out the strainer with brake or carb cleaner.

If its full of **** i'd be inclined to take the rocker cover off and give everything a good inspection.

If the motor has been maintained it should be pretty clean inside..

Timing chain tensioners and guide rails i'd also be inclined to check.

A bright torch and some manipulation of limbs should do it..

Remove the rocker cover of course ;)

Whats the oil pressure like?
 
No idea on oil pressure, not had any warning lights on but the mechanic I spoke to was telling me that he’s seen these showing decent pressure but partly clogged pickups, oil not reaching the head as well as it should His opinion was it’s worth a look
 
I did an oil change when I got it a year ago and the oil seemed ok, obviously black but not sludge, I used expensive oil and do very few miles so hopefully it won’t be bad

Having a brief read the M57 does have a little "history" of timing chain problems..

Again check the timing chains!!!! ;)
 
I’m no expert by any stretch so it could be, although the noise I have is nothing like what I’ve heard chain noise sound like.
