Hi there, was wondering if I could get a bit of advice.

I think I have managed to strip the thread of the sump plug of my 1994 Defender 300tdi, as it just spins and won't tighten, and then when I try to undo it, it tightens right up and I'm worried to put too much pressure on it in case I damage it further.

What would be the best thing to do? Assuming I get it out I'm worried that I'll damage the threads on the sump itself, so was looking at getting a helicoil, although after much searching on the internet I can't seem to find the exact thread size of the sump plug, does anybody know what it is?

Many thanks
Jack

Its a tapered plug, hence the workshop manual gives a big warning about over tightening it :(. It may be the threads have gone beyond the collar in the sump ? did you have the washer on ?

Not sure on how you can get it out other than the obvious. I would think you can get a sump without too much of a problem so would be tempted to just back it up, but having googled sump removal it looks a nightmare.

Not sure until I get it out, my worry is that I get it out to find the sump is damaged too....although given how tight the plug goes when trying to undo it I fear it will damage the sump on the way out.....basically I don't want to get the plug out, find the sump is damaged and have to leave it for a few days with no oil in it in case I have to move it (no off road parking), so would like to have a helicoil kit ready in case I need it

You could always order a new plug as you will probably need it anyway then measure it to get the thread size or a helicoil kit to fit it.
