It's 1/4" BPS which equates to about 13mm as far as I can work out. That's why I thought the M15 kit should do it? I don't want to make the situation worse for myself :)

This is what you found as a repair for a fooked drain plug hole. This is designed for repairing a 13mm fooked drain hole. It is over sized and easy as hell to use. Just use the tape provided in the kit simple. You are making a simple job very difficult. No hole to drill no heli coil to fit , Heli coils are rather pricey. What you found is a very good repair and is used widely in the auto trade.

There was/is some definite panic. Looking at this it says This Kit Will Rethread A M12 Threaded Sump To M13, and as a 1/4" bps is roughly 13mm then I need a bigger one. It's confusing some of the other ones I've looked at for M13 say they are for repair M13 but have an M13 tap which would be too small.

Then if you search for M14 ones which you would think would repair an M13 to an M14 they actually repair M14 to M15. There seems to be none for doing an M13 to M14. This is assuming it will work on a 1/4"bps

Said to measure the thing you said didn't want to. so you are really just guessing looks like that kit will work. you need a 11.8mm hole to tape a 1/4 bsp thread

You are right it's a 1/4" as it's a 19mm head.

Early sumps, 1/4 x 19BSP have a 19mm sump plug (ie a 19mm spanner fits it).

Later sumps, M14 x 1.5 have a 15mm sump plug (ie a 15mm spanner fits it).


So yes if the tap size is 11.8mm then one of those M13 kits will work. I don't know where I got the tap size was 13mm from?

If I do that then there is no chance of putting a drainplug in it though. So I could take it to my 4x4 place and see if they can helicoil it and put in a drainplug at the same time. Which will cost a lot more but save me from making it worse in the future :eek:

Thanks again, this is turning into a longer thread than I thought. I just assumed it would have happened to a few other people.
 
Just be careful when you do sort it fella, and torque the new plug up properly, they aren't that tight, which is probably how you have managed to trash the thread this time;);););)
