Ok so I was doing a service and when I put the sump bolt back in it went reasonably tight then it went looser so I stopped turning it and for some stupid reason instead of taking it out and trying to fix it I just went and put the oil in. :confused:

So far it's not leaking but do you think I will be safe to just leave it till the next service and then helicoil it or replace the sump or should I drain the oil and see if can fix it now? What are the chances of the bolt falling out while I'm driving?

Any words of wisdom/abuse would be appreciated.

You have probably just stripped the thread from the soft aluminium sump.

You can get thread repair kits such as heli-coil and few others, never used them, but I'm sure some on here can give you more information on them.
 
Any model or type with that? PTFE tape is sometimes OK to seal it up temporarily if its leaking.
 
Thanks for the tips, it's a 300tdi with the 19mm hex bolt. I thought it might be the crushable washer giving so I'm gonna leave it for a couple of days and see if it leaks. If its ok then I will leave it till next service and then either replace the sump or Heli coil the thread. Another job for the list! It's only done 27k so can't imagine that bolt had but taken out that many times! You gotta love it :)
 
I'll be honest I wasn't torquing it because I couldn't find my torque wrench this morning, I really didn't do it very hard but maybe not very hard was too hard.

I might try taping the next size up when I do the next service. Until then I'll just worry about it falling out, blasting oil all over the road and killing my engine every time I drive it :)

Wouldnt beat yerself up about it mate! Any time its been overtighteneed in its life coulda knacked the thread, itt may have been on its last legs anyway. If you can oversize and tap a good thread youre back to new condition :)

Also if you got some fine copper wire take 1 strand and wrap around the threads and install, will work for a temporary repair

Oversized plug fix looks like good, does anyone know where I can get one?

I'll see in the morning if the landy has been leaking and marking it's territory on the street :)
 
Great I found a few on flea bay, anyone know what M size the original bolt is? I can't find it even searching for the original. :confused:

:lol::lol: you could take it out and measure it........... Stick a rag in the hole, might want to ask the Doris if you could borrow a cotton plug of hers

Yeah I don't really want a whole set, thanks for looking though. I've found a few kits on ebay e.g.

M13 Oil / Sump Pan Thread Repair Kit / Set | eBay

However I just need to know what size the original bolt is and I'm not keen on taking it out to measure it really. It's 19mm head if that helps? I don't know if you can use that workout what M number the thread is?
