May I have some advice please.
Seven years ago my 1962 Series 2a 2286cc petrol was converted to an ex Discovery 200tdi using the original 2a gearbox. The diffs were changed to 3.54 to 1 from a scrapped Range Rover last year and now clutch slip has developed quickly on a clutch which has covered only 6k miles since the tdi conversion.

It's a 9 .5 inch clutch bought then from one of the "big" reproduction parts concerns, you know who I mean.
Can I have your advice on which make of clutch I should buy now. The 200tdi engine has done for the original I have no doubt.
I don't want to buy a heavy duty clutch because most result in a heavy clutch pedal operation.

Glencoyne recomends 9.5 clutch plate and discovery pressure plate.
AP brand have a good reputation as have Borg and beck.
Has the plate become contaminated with oil or friction material worn away?
 
I thought AP and Borg and Beck were the same company? Something to do with trade agreements/import duties?

When the Tdi engine was fitted a Series 3 bellhousing was used as it made the conversion easier by using a S3 slave cylinder as well.
The 2a went in for it's MOT yesterday and I was able to have a good look for any dampness or signs of fluid leak - there were none so I assume the friction material is worn.
A Discovery clutch plate will be on the "to buy" list.

I thought the discovery clutch plate had the wrong number of splines for a series gearbox input shaft?
 
I suspect confusion arises because people simply say 'plate' and don't always specify if they are meaning the pressure plate or the friction plate.

However if anyone had clicked the link I provided earlier, it is rather explicit.


Remove the Discovery clutch plate and replace with Series 3, 9½” FRC2297 clutch plate. Vehicles fitted with Series 2-2a gearboxes should use part number 571228 9½” 2A diaphragm clutch pressure plate(cover), Series 3 models use the Discovery clutch pressure plate(cover).

However my hunch is, if this wasn't done, then this is maybe the root cause:

It is highly recommended that the bottom four holes on the flywheel housing have fixings to the block stiffener (ladder frame) on the engine to prevent crankshaft oil seal from leaking as the engine and gearbox can cause the flywheel housing to flex when not correctly supported, we can supply these SPCK224BLT which come with instructions for fitting these.

There was a thread on here a couple of days ago were a member had posted pictures of doing this.
