Hi all, Mark from Ramsbottom, Lancashire
Picked up a 1981 88" Series 3 2.25 Diesel a couple of years back as something of a hobby/labour of love.
All going well until a couple of weeks back when she refused to start.
Replaced all the glow plugs (Parallel System) - still refusing to start
Replaced fuel filter, bled system through filter and injector pump - still refusing to start
Replaced lift pump, bled system through filter and injector pump - still refusing to start
Replaced battery (Yuasa HSB019 100Ah 900A) - still refusing to start
On attempting to start a "blue" smoke can be seen feeding back through air filter

Can any of the more learned members possibly offer any advice

Many thanks in advance

Mark

Sounded like glow plugs when you started. Just done my own.
With a long enough turn over it should eventually fire up without them so I'd rule that out for now.
I take it you have bled the fuel pump upto the injector pipes by loosening the 8mm nuts on the side of the pump and hand pumping. ???

Have you tried cracking the unions undone a bit at the injectors and spinning it over ? They will usually bleed off and fire then tighten the unions up if you are lucky whilst it is still running.

Think he said he had. For clarity I shall include this! :)

Compression test!

Might not be a bad idea, but good to rule out the simple issues like air leaks first.

blue smoke from air box would suggest valve or head gasket issue, remove rocker box and check all valves open fully by turning engine over by hand

Oh God! you don't live near Neil do you?!!!! Bleed as described - spin it over with ALL injector pipes open/cracked - be sure to observe diesel squirting out, close em while spinning and hopefully you'll get a fire - failing that try easy start just to see if it will fire - all after following James's excellent advice - good luck

Ill take a gallon or two of easystart up tomorrow. What sticky valve....................:D

Can someone in south Cheshire catch the cylinder head.

I read it that he only bled to the 8mm bleed point, cracking the injectors moves the bleed point further on. Once again sound advice from James.

Yea. In theory the pump should be able to blow the injector pipes clear if its been bled properly but who knows if the pump is ok.
Might be worth a squirt of easy start just to see if it will fire up. At east that points to fuel delivery.
