hello everyone new to the site but have been watching it for a while. my defender 110 engine noise suddenly changed and fuel consumption went up dramaticaly. i used to get from liverpool to rossendale and back for £20 but on sun it cost me £30 for the same journey and diesel hasnt gone up that much. any suggestions or advice would be great. thanks shaun

have you checked carefully for leaks (with the injun running)?
is there any exhaust smoke?
is the oil level OK?

£20 of diesel 3 months ago now costs £25 so theres a fiver of it...what do you mean by "used to"?

by used to i meen last wed. and their are no fuel leaks i checked that but my oil level seems to have gone up ? as for smoke maybe a little but not blue or black

hard to tell its been running on rapeseed oil mix for the last few months. but the oil dose not seem thin so im a bit unsure. thought it could be the lift pump or maybe an injector hosing but the smoke is not exesive, its got me baffled. does the fact that rapeseed is thicker put more pressure on the pumps?

This happened to me. It was the viscous fan that had siezed solid and was turning at the same speed as the engine hence the increase in engine noise.

I wouldn't have believed it if it had not happened to me that the fan could cause such a large increase in fuel consumption.

Check that you can turn the fan easily by hand if not throw it away and fit an electric one.

I have tok my fan off my disco with no problems at all. That includes a 5 hour drive on the motorway to run town stop start driving. :)

yeh I was driving round for 3 week without a fan while i got round to fitting the electric ones with no problems at all. Landies do not generally over heat but i wouldnt want to risk it stuck in a traffic jam or off roading in low range giving it some boot on a hot summers day.

I have had the fans on a while now and to be honest I havent heard them come on. I know they work so no jokes about dogey wiring!!
