Hey I want to service my 1996 300tdi disco.
Just wondering if some one can please list what oils an filters etc I will need for engine and axles and gearbox etc and if some one knows were I can get it all in Essex.I'm around the romford area.
Never serviced a landrover or any other kind of car before but want to start learning how to my self.

i would use EP90 for the gearbox and the axles, change the oil filter, fuel filter, air filter.

you will be able to get everything from your local 4x4 shop and they will advise you on which oil to put in the engine.
 
ebay sell "service kits" for Discos, all the filters etc. And get the Haynes! Every car I ever work on I get the Haynes (or Chilton if it's a Yank).
 
Find a place to do the work...

driveway is fine as long as it's flat and a good enough surface to jack the vehicle up on to axel stands or ramps, don't forget to chock the wheels.

Make sure you have the right tools, it's no good if you can't undo the refill plug and you taken the gearbox oil out. :eek::D

Don't wear clothes your going to worry about, you can buy a boiler suit in Machine Mart, even LARGE ones.

Get a medium sized funnel, it'll have several jobs, when you take the sump nut off it'll help direct the oil stream into the waste oil collection pan and not over your chassis / arm / leg.

Wear nitrile gloves, oil is not good for your skin.

Find out if your local council recycles waste oil, do not pour it down a storm drain or I WILL FIND YOU.

Ask for help from someone whose done it before, they can 'supervise'.
 
Ummm yet a stupid question again but what tools do I need for the sump plug and the axles etc?? Only asking as I'm priceing it all up now.

I have worked on cars before but never a 4x4 and never done a service so I have most tools but don't know if I'll have the rite one for the sump plugs,axles and gear box.
More tips welcome and I will be buying a haynes as well.

Also why do I need to Jack it up? It has a 2inch lift with bigger Tryes so I can get under it no problem but if there's a reason for it then fare enuf.

You cant examin the brake parts or change the pads ect safely without stands bud, a must have for any DIY mechanic. What part of the world you in? It's a big family here and someone will be close by to run you through it, if you ask nicely of course!!;)

hi tools needed gearbox drain 32mm or 11/4 spanner filler t55 torx bit ,transfer box drain 17mm or 11/16 ,filler 1/2 socket drive ie ratchette or bar ,axles drain and filler 1/2 socket drive, engine drain 19mm usually but some are different, for brake calipers 1/2 inch bihex good quality socket ,for discs 14mm good quality socket ,a good lever bar to prise pistons back slowly never quick ,filter wrench that goes upto 100mm ,13mm socket and extension to undo front banjo for fuel feed pipe to slacken to bleed after changing filter is the best place to bleed, for swivels 13mm spanner for filler 10 mm for level near lock stop
 
I find it's a good idea to tke the fill plug out first ...then you know you can get some more oil in :)

I'm a skinny bint so for oil changes, greasing propshaft slide and UJ's and diffs. I don't jack it up, but I do chock the wheels.

NO don't put ep90 in the gearbox, use MTF or ATF fluid, epgoes in the transfer box, axles and front hubs.

EP is too heavy for these boxes as they have pumped lubrication and can't handle it.
