So I did something silly......

I had to change the shaft on my mt82 gearbox, did that and rushed to get everything back on. But had a road speed related noise, not actually that loud but you could hear it only when accelerating from 30mph.

Anyway, driven it about 100 miles and just looked again at everything, popped rear cover off and the input gear was in backward! Nothing on the input gear looks damaged, bearings seem fine and so I turned it round and everything now works perfect.

But.....could I have done any damage? I've got some long drives into Europe in the summer so if there is something to look and listen for I'd appreciate some input....

And yes I'm an idiot, god knows how many times I've taken input shafts out!

Thought if they were the wrong way round you only get 3gears.

I had low and high, diff lock.....all worked. I didn't think it was that easy to fit backwards but it was so easy I didn't notice

Think the gear just isn't fully meshed so potentially could damage the teeth under shock loading.

I did exactly the same thing years ago and after fitting it took it for a test drive with all the floor plates out, the noise from the transfer box was very impressive!
Input gear fitted the correct way I did many thousands of miles after us with no issues.
