I haven't been done it personally as I went back during the day to have a look at it and there's no chance of me getting anywhere down there and I was surprised how far he got actually,Interesting .. This is the lane that you have to back track or turn round 'cos it has the locked railway gates at the far end? Driven it a couple of times ages ago.
Last time I checked it was still listed as Byway, but there's some contention about it .... being very boggy, muddy and a bit of a play lane for dickwads ..

Is there many byways that come to a dead end??
Unfortunately yes ... County Boundaries or changes, new roads/bypasses, local changes. All of the Byways at sometime had to go somewhere so probably all were once through roads but yes, there are many that simply stop ... often with no turning circle, so it's reverse all the way .. In this case the railway, as they are able to do quite easily I believe, simply locked the gated crossing due to 'Safety Reasons', which is the hardest thing to fight against!
Maybe because it's too much effort too put a crossing light and a phone in :-/ much easier with a padlock
