Remove the plug on the top of the tbox and take out the spring and plunger.
Remove cover plate and loosen the pinch bolt on the transfer selector fork.
Then undo the nuts holding output housing to tbox and the whole housing comes away. Then look down as the locking dog falls on the floor.

I strongly recommend you get a manual or use the links to the PDF ones. It's not hard but also not obvious.

You have to remove the gearbox from the engine and chassis to get the front output box dismantled .
If the measurements are correct on the shafts in the various positions the link between shafts must be working ok.

just got back from skeggy been for a few days, i have got the box ready to lift out , i am going to take the front output assembly out, but wondered if the assembly is the same on a series2 , are they interchangeable ?

should be the same, you need to remove the tin cover with the 4 bolts on the t/box to undo the fork pinch bolt ,as well as the detent plug in front of it .fork may well need help with a lever to slide off the selector shaft

just been to skegness for a few days, and have got gearbox ready for lifting out, the main question now is are the front output boxes interchangeable, ie series 2 and 3

tanks James, i have printed a pdf workshop manual and think i have got my head around it now, just a case of swapping front output box if it is knackered

Had trouble with mine slipping into neutral a while back. That was the red 2wd/4wd lever. It turns out one of the bolts on the three selector shafts fell out. Found it when draining the oil from the gearbox. Their is a inspection cover you can take off to see. You can see the clamps on the shafts in the wikipedia photo.

I am no expert, just saying might take a quick peek to make sure the bolts are there and the clamps are tight.

ended up taking box out and stripping the front output box off, didn't find anything untoward, managed to get another series 3 gearbox off flebay, fitted that and its fine now, going to keep other box for spares, but thanks everybody for your knowledgable input its great to have this blog when you need it
