Hello all,
Recently joined up as im working on my series 2 and knew id have loads of questions - here is the first...
Im running a 3.5 v8 on strombergs. She starts ok and revs fine when not up to full temp but as soon as she is warm and you hit the loud pedal she starts to rev so far but then just goes flat like barrrrrrrrrr. (thats not a sheep under the bonnet). Just wont rev freely.
Ive chaged the coil and looked at the HT components and they all look new so i messed with the carbs which did improve things - ie no flames out the exhaust or banging like a shotgun. I thought id strip the carbs but could do with some kind of manual - can anyone point me to one please or give me any tips on Strombergs. Im not to familiar with them.

strombergs arnt the best carbs, they are however int he range rover classic haynes manual 1970 to 1986 (may well be in the later ones too) pretty sure it shows you how to sort them.

it probably needs new diaphrams, £13 from lr direct irrc.

I did check the diaphrams fett and they were ok - or at least they looked it. Can they go pourous or do they usually split/perish.
I started to take the carbs of today but it seems you need to be a magician to get to the one nut off... then it started to rain so i gave up.

yes the back ones a bastid, you have to pull the carb toward you as it comes undone. I cut down a cheap spanner to get on it avoiding the linkages.

not sure how they fail as I have su's but worth swapping them for that money

LOL - yes i did start to look for an old spanner to hack but could only find an open end which probably wouldnt help. Ill have to pick one up.
Maybe ill just change them anyhow if they are that cheap.

Its odd though that it only happens when the engine is hot - not sure what that is telling me to be honest - anyone got any ideas?

dont know if it helps but I head an old mk1 fiesta that did this when it was warm / hot, turned out is was fuel starvation / evaporation. I re-routed the fuel line away from the gap between the inlet manifold and it worked ok

Like I said, it may not help but is it worth a try?

the haynes i mentioned may well say under fault finding

Yep i checked all that out already - i had the same thought. All the lines seem ok and not getting to hot. Yesterday i ran her with the Kenlow on full tilt to keep her nice and cool but the same fault happend when she warmed up. :doh:
Ill try and get a Haynes manual and search for words of wisdom.
Cant work on it now until later in the week but i need to get those carbs off and stripped with the magic spanner.
Ill post again when ive had a look at the insides.

it will be the earlier range rover haynes you want if your running strombergs

I managed to download one from a link on this forum thanks fett - not a Haynes but a workshop manual - just having a read now.
