My new to me 110 300tdi feels like it has a pair of large hands around its throat.

Oils all changed today, fuel filter in the morning, but while it revs easily, at rest, and the boost gauge responds quickly when driving, the 110 doesn't respond so well. Slow acceleration, like the brakes are on!

Clutch not slipping, but biting point high and heavy, due to be changed next week.

Snorkel recently fitted by previous owner, I might run with the air filter cover end off to see if that is the cause.

Any thoughts, anyone?

Also check that all your wheels spin free, no brake binding. Also check the condition of you turbo hoses inside and flush out the intercooler, might all be gummed up and restricting airflow

Sedimenter! Thats another thing I didn't look at... I seem to have forgotten more than I knew!

Turbo hoses are silicon, intercooler is on my list of jobs to do. I doubt I have binding brakes, the 150 mile motorway run home would have shown that up!

So, fuel filter done, seems to be better, but up a local hill today, I had to drop a gear just to try and maintain some speed. :(

No smoke from my rear, boost gauge showing 15psi, and slightly above. That boost is going somewhere, but its not to the wheels!

Its in for the clutch tomorrow, so I will see what the chaps at the garage say.

Whats your money on??

Air filter, tappets, lift pump? Did you look for the sedimenter?

air filter relatively clean - boost pressure is normal, so I'm not thinking air restriction.

tappets - possibly - I would expect some smoke under acceleration if they were out? Or am I a muppet?

Lift pump - might explain the tractorish sound at cold idle

No evidence of a sedimenter fitted

Seems like the fuel to me, poss turbo to pump pipe? Split diaphragm?

We will find out later !

Just out of curiosity, but have you driven any other Tdi Land Rover's? Just trying to gauge how you are comparing it's performance.

That said, a good Tdi should be peppy, but often aren't 100% stock. The injector pumps should all be the same, but tiny adjustments make a huge difference, so there is variation from engine to engine. And sadly some just don't make the same power either.

If there is no black smoke under acceleration, that is partly the problem. Mildly tweaking the injector pump will massively liven a Tdi up.

I would also make sure the rockers/followers are all well adjusted too, as over time they will need adjusting and often aren't.

Lastly and a long shot. But do you know what transfer box is in your 110? If some muppet has fitted a Disco spec 1:1.2 LT230, then it'll pretty much kill performance in a heavy 110 on standard tyres.

Turbo hoses can tend to collapse under boost on Td5 as they degrade cutting off airflow and stopping turbo from spooling up. Can you hear your turbo spooling up? We've had them here in the heat where they look fine outside but seem to delaminate and the insides collapse under boost and the turbo doesn't stand a chance.

Food for thought there...

My second landy was a 110 200tdi bought from Ian that runs IRB developments. It wasn't until after I sold her, that I found out he'd modified it a bit :)

I've had another 200tdi since, and a 300tdi disco, but its been about 5 years since landy ownership, so comparison is hazy.

Flooring it while on boost, I would expect a puff of smoke, but there's nothing, which is why I am thinking fuelling. Its possible that the pump has been tinkered with I suppose, and maybe in a bad way, although there are no marks on the screws.

Intercooler hoses are silicon and look newish.

No news from the garage - they closed at 5! But I did say that I would pick it up thursday. Watch this space....

I would expect a bit of smoke under acceleration from most old diesels. But tappets are a common cause of performance issues, people don't seem to bother with them much! ;)

clutch done - that was on borrowed time! The release bearing was rapidly working its way through the fingers on the plate.... various bolts missing from the bell housing, various worn and poor parts...

There was no play in the pedal, meaning that the system was under slight pressure all the time, garage thinks that this meant that the hydraulic pressure would increase if left in the same gear, and end up with some clutch slip - enough to force a change of gear.

I haven't had chance to test up the same hill yet mind - over the weekend I'll do that.

clutch is now light, with a biting point I can feel :)

So the same hill is better - managed to hold 50mph in 4th gear, with boost showing 15psi. It did drop towards the top, losing boost and speed, but its better!

I will get round to the tappets at some point, as advised :) but its not something I've done before!
