My second post already . . .

I recently purchased a 3.9 V8i auto discovery (1995). Since buying it I have noticed a strange "ticking" noise. It appears to come from the instrument panel or steering column and is loudest when the engine is cold. It only appears under acceleration and the tick increases in speed depending on the amount of acceleration and speed. Under crusing conditions, the noise does not appear at all!!!

The noise is not "mechanical" from the engine etc, it almost sounds like a relay or a louder ticking of a clock.

I don't think it is life threatening, but just niggling. Has anyone got any ideas???

Thanks

Terry

Not sure mate

It could be the speedo/tacho, or maybe something like a leaf in the air blower?

Is the speedo/tacho reading right?

speedo appears to be reading right, but did notice a "judder" on needle yesterday . . . i did wonder whether it was speedo cable???

Not a coincidence but it's driven from the transfer box! But this wont answer both of your problems im affraid! Sorry!

Could be the speedo at the dashboard end then! Again don't panic but the milage register, lines up ok does it!?!

Yes, the mileage register lines up fine - noise definitely seems to be coming from steering wheel/ instrument panel area

I've had that weird ticking noise too but it's only happened twice (94 200Tdi). Really odd. Definitely seems to be coming from the instrument panel, got quite loud and fast when I got up to 50 and slowed down with the car. Definitely related to speed rather than revs. When I used the car later, the noise had gone.

Yes, sounds similar - it is really odd and as I say seems to get quieter the further I drive as though something has warmed up. Doesn't sound fatal just niggly. Your point about speed definitely makes me think it is something within the speedo - maybe cable???

It could be a nervous mouse, the faster you go, the more it gets worried, the more it shakes... causing all sorts of sounds

perhaps the previous owner had a load of trouble with it so he put time bomb in the steering column but its linked to the ecu so it only works now and then ;)

Got The Same Noise On My Td4 51 Plate Freelander, driving Me Nuts But Think The Same As You That This Is The Speedo Cable And Not The Revs Of The Vehicle. Please Please If You Find Out What It Is Post Asap Mate And I Will Do The Same

Cheers

That Must Have Taken You Ages, Putting A Capital Letter On Every Word! :D

Ahhhhhhhhh is not just me then, this same noise has been driving me mad for over 2 years now. The noise has got slightly worse in the last 2 months. when accelerating the noise is there but when i come off the power is slows down and dissapears, when i am cruising its not there.
It is definatley coming from behind the instument pannel, i think speedo or rev counter. . . . . i think !!!!!!

;) SEEMS THE NOISE UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL DISAPEARS ON MY FREELANDER WHEN MY FOOT IS NOT RESTING ON THE CLUTCH WHILST DRIVING. THIS MUST MEAN THAT A CABLE OR SOMETHING IS TANGLED OR WRAPPED AROUND THE CLUTCH MECHANISM . STILL CANT FIND WHERE THOUGH... CAN EVERYONE TRY TAKING YOUR FOOT OFF THE CLUTCH TO SEE IF WE ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.

CHEERS EVERYONE

For goodness sake can you all stay away from airports and other crowded places.
