Evening all,
At the weekend, I changed the switch panel above the radio on my 2001 P38 4.6 Vogue (old one was damaged). When I started the job, I pulled the radio out a bit to check whether there were any fixings for the switch panel behind the radio (the panel comes down behind the radio and locates on a couple of lugs).
Changed the panel all OK* but since then I've had a problem with the radio. At first I couldn't get any sound at all, then the sound came back but there was an occasional sharp "crack" of static. Sometimes (and I know this sounds daft) I couldn't get radio volume back until I changed between FM & CD.
Yesterday, it was working but every so often the volume would decrease by about 50%. So, today I pulled it out again and checked everything. Someone has, at some point, spliced a couple of cables in, I presume for a power feed, probably for a car phone kit, so I removed those. Now, however, when I plug the radio in, it switches on, asks for the code, then locks onto a radio station, or controls the CD, but there's no volume at all, just this sharp static crack about every 10 seconds.
It's the Harmon Kardon system, so I know there are aux amplifiers all over the place, but have checked all the relevant fuses which the handbook lists and they're all good (no failed fuse indicator on the dash either). So now I'm stuck. Plugged in a spare JVC head unit earlier but still nothing, although I wasn't sure that would work anyway.
I've left the HU disconnected overnight in case there is static or something causing the issue but I'm not hopeful. Does anyone recongnise these symptoms who can tell me that there's a simple, happy ending here, or am I doomed to silence until I spend a gazillion quid?
Thanks chaps.
(* - everything works except strangely the cruise control. Can't believe I've had a vacuum hose failure at the same time I swapped the cables over to a new switch! Am planning to try the old switch back in there when I get a moment)
