Hi ,ive got a rumbling noise in the car and a noise at the steering wheel when making turns or slightly weaving from side to side, but it goes off when i knock it into neutral and freewheel

can you help me as its doin me head in

thanks

I had similar when the the vehicle was turning even slightly to the right.
Thought it was the offside wheel bearing but turned out to be the nearside one, when jacked up and moving the wheels around, couldn't feel any play.
Bearing changed and stopped the annoying sound. Only problem is they aren't cheap at around the £200, coz the hub and bearing come as one unit.

surely it depends on what car he has, it's only the later disco's that you get ass raped on for a noisy wheel bearing:D

its a 1999 td5.its buggin the life outa me,,i just think its strange when i can hear it at the steering wheel and it goes off when free wheelin

just thought ide let you know the latest
i jacked the car up and took the front drivers wheel off
when i turned the hub slowly it turns round once then it made a sound like something dropping or knocking half way along the axle near to where the hockey stick fixes to the axle...every time i turn it this happens.has anybody got any ideas

Hence the reason I looked at his public profile and found out it was a TD5 he was referring . I wouldn't have posted my reply if it hadn't been.

Sounds like your front CV joint is shot. It'll sound fine when there's no drive to it, but when you put power down the drive-train it'll grumble.:(
