Evening all,

Picked up a 53-plate 4.4 V8 yesterday and originally thought the ZF box was going in to the 'cooling strategy' mode, and probably had a clogged oil cooler, etc, because it was holding gears for ages before changing. However, I've now realised that's not the problem...

If you start the car, the dash and lights near the gear selector correctly show P. Move the selector in to reverse, and they correctly show R, etc. If you move it in to drive, or sport mode, the gear selector lights always show the correct position, and the dash initially shows D as well. After anywhere between 2 seconds to 45 seconds later, the D on the dash will disappear, and the gearbox then refuses to change gear. If you slightly touch the gear selector (and I do mean slight!), the D reappears, and the car then changes gear. If you drive along with one hand held pushing the gear selector very slightly forward towards neutral, the D always stays lit and the car drives perfectly for miles and miles (but you do end up with a tired arm!).

Changes are nice and smooth, and basically the gearbox itself seems great.

I had a quick search around on the forum and couldn't find any threads relating to a problem like this, only people who couldn't get it in to drive at all. Presumably it's an issue with the linkage or the selector on the gearbox, but given that only the slightest of touches is required to make it work perfectly, I'm hoping it can't be anything too major!

Any thoughts..?

Thanks!

adjustment of the selector cable to the gearbox XYZ switch mounted on the side of the box.....

If this is OK, start looking for damage to the XYZ switch itself or check the electrical connections thereto....

As Saint has already stated it sounds as though the XYZ Switch or the Tranny shift Bowden Cable is slightly out of alignment, (although not sure how similar the Tranny shift mechanism is to that of the P38)?

I know the P38 shift mechanism intimately as my shift was very stiff and the alignment was well off, (none of the indicators matched the gear positions - although remarkably no error messages)?

The P38 XYZ Swich is fixed by two bolts, (one may be a nut from memory), and the mounting holes are elongated to allow about 5 degrees of radial movement and it may just be this that requires a slight tweak, (you may find it is loose if you are very lucky)!

I also had to align my shift cable Bowden cable first, (undo bolt and remove cable from Tranny lever on box), place stick in Park and then manually move lever, (on gearbox), to Park position and twirl cable end, (it is threaded), until it is a free friction fit into its receptacle.

Then move shift lever to other end of travel, (1 I believe), and then move gearbox lever to furthest opposite position and check that cable end fits smoothey once again.

It will be a compromise between these two positions to get the correct positions throughout the range.

I have yet to road test mine as I am still undertaking various body repairs but hope to get her back on the road at the start of Feb although it may only get one journey - to the breakers yard!

Having same exact problem as you describe.. Don't have and idea, in the mean time I have a hair scrungy over the gear selector and around the 2 traction buttons behind the gear selector so I don't have to hold it as I'm driving

After reading multiple forums on other sites and videos, problem sounds like gear shift cable to transmission has been stretched. Therefore adjust it or it will need to be replaced.
