Hello, sold my 'Series 3 rear axle' today and the man who bought it called me rather confused as to why the diff was situated on the left side other than the right. I did not realise this when I sold it to him as I had just bought it to use on a trailer.

I was hoping one of you could tell me where this strange axle has come from? It has a filler but no drain plug either.

Thanks.

Ok - he said he defo doesn't have it the wrong way round. It has series hubs and mounts for leaf springs. When I bought it, it was advertised as a S3 axle.

Salisbury Front axle??? if he thought it was a rear axle it'd look like the diff was on the left?? Pics would help?? Or don't triple axle jobbies sometimes have an offset diff.

Here's a pic, defo not Salisbury

I reckon its upside down. The thing on the diff pan looks like a drain plug to me. Could be the brake backplates are upside down making it look the right way up in the pic

I can't remember if there was a filler plug but I will ask him.

I bought it like that not took it off the vehicle.

Spring plates could be wrong way up but like I thought it could be the upside down. He was adamant that it wasn't though and he seemed to have a good knowledge of it otherwise.

spring mounts and brake back plates are fastened on upside down

I cant see the breather on that image either. Have you got a pic of the other side?

Ok thanks I will send him a message. Looks to me though like the spring plates were the same on each side but I can't remember, too many bits to think about :p

bottom plate needs a hole in the center , it may have had top plates fitted all round

that doesn't look like any Series/Rover axle i've seen

both my 2a and 3 axles have the drain bung in the centre underneath, the vent is in the long side of the axle tube NOT on top of the diff housing

the bulge in the diff pan (for the crownwheel) is also to the long side of the axle

i've no idea what that axle is from

There have been several special projects featured in various 4x4 mag's over the last 30 plus years which had reversed axles in them, this could be one of them.

Got a reply back from him saying the breather would be underneath if he was to orient it the right way and the brake lines would be facing down. It's definitely off a Landy but god knows what!
