Sounds like a serpentine belt problem.
Could be that the alternator starts turning too slowly and the power steering pump also.
Maybe the AC compressor is for some reason providing way too much resistance to being turned.
I don't have a V8 just a TD5, so i don't know what belt turns what.
Got the feeling his compressor is seized and each time the solenoid connects the pulley to it the belt slips on it and can't run enough to power both the other things properly.
A test at tickover should show this.
Or something else.
