Hello anyone,

Looking for some help to escape from France....

Broke down on Sunday in South of France, Defender 110 1987, suspected CV joint or half shaft or front differential.

Came to this conclusion as so...
No drive in normal drive
Difflock engaged have drive
Grinding noise from front axle
Two front wheels off the ground, turn one and the other does nothing

Have managed to strip down the side of the front axle from which the nasty grinding sound was coming and have discovered that the CV joint has disintegrated, ball bearings and casing in the bottom of the swivel housing. Seems to be no damage to the half shaft. Now when the opposite wheel is turned the half shaft on damaged side also turns, ?so no damage to diff?

What I need help with is, if I can get a CV joint, do I need to check anything else for damage, the inside of the swivel housing around the bottom bearing looks like it may have been scored? Also do I need to remove the whole swivel assembly and clean to ensure there is no debris left in there?

Sorry for the rambling but I have only limited battery on the laptop, hope I have given enough info for someone to help.

Thanks, stranded in France,

Phil

Check your swivel bearing for play (rock the wheel by top and bottom). When my O/S went last year the lower swivel bearing needed replacing as well.

If you can find a LR breaker yard you may be able to get the entire swivel ball, with half shaft and CV jont etc, it just unbolts from the end of the axle. This way you could slide the entire new unit in to your diff and be away again.

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated.
Have managed to source a CV joint and have stripped the axle down and cleaned everything in the mean time. No damaged to swivel ball or oil seal, from closer inspection, so just going to replace CV and obviously gaskets from there out. Then will thankfully be on our way home.
Will be in touch for general chit chat upon our return!
