thing is, it aint british, LR like most car producers source their componants from a global marketplace, there are only a couple of criteria; cost and consistency. and as the uk is to expensive to make cheap volume items ( i'm happy to argue who is responsible for this but this is not the time or place) you end up importing vast numbers of parts.
and as for moaning about the EU, what ever happens we are expected to conform to all sorts of standards if we are to sell within the largest, richest market on the planet, so those wanting to go off into the sunset, keep that in mind, at the very least we are able to influence some of the rules we live by while in the EU, just how much influence will we have outside?
and no, Im not a huge fan of the EU project as it stands, but the rosy glow of nostalgia dont work for me either.

I agree, and also agree with PaulD when he posted that they cannot make products that we don't buy. If more people bought British stuff, not just landrovers, some of the companies could have invested in product development, and the products improved.
As you know, I am very anti Federal EU superstate, but no probs with trading block. but whatever happens re EU it is probably to late to turn round UK Def. production. And if that comes to pass, my preference would be India rather than extinction.

Hell EU regulations have effect on US truck and agriculture regulations. New stuff now is EU4 compliant...........So you guys are not the only ones effected

No, it's a disgrace in my book.

As others have mentioned, a drip, drip, drip of manufacturing from here to India will occur- no I'm not talking about in 5 years-we know that investments have been made at plants here, so for the foreseeable LR will be produced here. But if the defender becomes as Indian as curry, then the rest of LR will too in time.

I frankly ams proud of this country's heritage-motoring and otherwise, and hate to see things unnecessarily go down the Swanee.

To all those nay sayers- it was born here, lives here and with a little help from the Drs could reside here for a long time yet.
The alternertive is to stop it completely. That would be a disgrace.
 
I've recently spoken to 2 people who have bought new defenders, one less than 12 months old and one brand new. Both have spent more time back in the dealers than on the road. These are cars that cost about £30,000. Is it any wonder that the sales are falling. Landrover's core market must surely have been people like the military, utility companies, civil engineering etc. They can't afford that sort of unreliability.

I think its the best thing to happen to the Defender if it is made here in India. At least it will still be in production and spare parts will still be available.

Also for guys like me who have a 1991 Defender here in India we will be very happy as we can have access to spare parts and new vehicles at a better cost.

Long live the Defender! Weather it is built in UK or INDIA it does not matter, what matters the most is that this wonderful ICON will still be alive for years to come!

Would love to buy a brand new Def 90 in 2016.
 
For me the defenders had its day, love my 200tdi as it's how a defender should be, no cats, egr's, ecu etc etc, latest engines to meet regulations are rubbish, cheap unreliable units.
Personally couldn't care less where it's built as would never buy one but it will still come with a warranty so you can get to nearest garage in limp home mode.

The only British thing about it worth lauding is the design, certainly the manufacture has been shoddy at best - something that dates right back to the '70s when it truly was a "British company".

Even if it is made in India, it's still an iconic British design, and I hope the Indian factory can make it well and cheaply.

Im sure you would still be able to import them, the VW campers were banned form production for els and safty BS, so they shipped em abroad to be built, you could still imort/buy em new tho.

Look at the MOD sales places in the UK they have close to a 100 brand new never used defender, 90,110, and 110 and 130 pickups for sale very nice priced. BUT they are not allowed for UK,EU, or North america sales. Reason they don't met emissions/safety. Puma body's with 300 TDI in them.;)

So why does everyone think if made in India they could get them to the UK? It will never happen.

Just like the ford and chevy's made in uk/eu they may be the same body style as US made, But you have different engines in them that are not allowed in the US.
 
Its happening because it means they can bye pass eu regs and keep producing it what will be a redundant model for the utility market cheaply.

It won't mean everything else moves it will mean that the longbridge factory can concentrate on the new model without the need for a costly new factory in the uk. Longbridge can't be expanded so really its a good option.

If it's made in small numbers for less stringent markets, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to personally import one if you really want the current model post-2015. It should be the same as importing an american car, registering a homebuild or any other non-approved car.- if it will pass an IVA test, you can register it here.

No its not. That's bollocks and you know it is. Why do slab front buses or trucks still comply with eu crash safety? It's stopped being sold here because there's no market for it. No ones buying them and like it or not LR are a business and like any good business they need to try and keep profits up. Continuing to hand build a very specific vehicle on a very specialised production line that can't be used for anything else is not economical. Especially when those vehicles don't sell. That's why. Bugger all to do with crash safety

I'm sorry, but if I'm to believe what I've read in Land Rover Montly on page 26, the Dave Phillips column, who has said that he has it on great authority that the defender will lock stock and barrel be produced in India after 2015 (I'm not a marketing executive or in any way connected to LRM magazine) it's absolutely disgraceful.

The great and the good of the present board of Land Rover are going to ship off one of the greatest British icons to India? When it's becoming ever more iconic? It's too much to bare.... Surely there must be some way to produce it here.... Your thoughts please-to show the very very out if touch Land Rover fat cats that there about to make a mistake equivocal to selling your family silver to the rag and bone man.

You have to remember that Land Rover now make big heavy luxury cars, not off roaders.
The Defender is the top selling LR product in France by some margin.
You also have to remember TATA are Indian, they will be able to sell large numbers of Fenders in India without worrying about all the type approval crap.
