Hi guys
Yesterday my td4 decided not to stop when i turned the ignition off, infact the engine run on for several minutes before stopping.this is the first time its happened. I understand it could be the stop solenoid faulty, but a friend said that only applied to older models. Mine is 02 plate. Can anyone help please.

It's probably the turbo seal. If it's not seized now Don't start it again until you have fixed the problem. There's no run solonoid on the TD4 as it's a common rail engine.
It can't run without the ignition on, unless it's running on engine oil, thrown out of the turbo seals. This is known as diesel runaway and generally destroys the engine.

As Nodge says, don't run it again until its been looked at.

Yes - the alarming thing is that this is VERY likely running on oil leaking through the turbo. If you have an auto, I believe its almost impossible to stop it until its burnt all the engine oil or more likely run away and the engine has disintegrated - as in the above video - you can try blocking the air inlet if you are brave (or possibly stupid) enough. If its manual you can try putting in in (a high?) gear with the brakes on and stalling it.

On Freelander though, there is the possibility that the ignition switch is knackered. When it fails, it usually turns the turns the ignition/engine off when you're driving. It doesn't usually leave the ignition on. Did you happen to notice whether things that usually go off with the ignition did when you turned the key to off?
 
That faster you can stop the engine the better. You don't want to leave it to use up all the fuel. The only way that can happen is for oil pressure to drop off. This leads to bearing failure or crank seizure.
The fastest and safest way to stop the TD4 once it's started to runaway is to cut the fuel supply. This fuel is the oil thrown from the turbo bearings. So you need to stop the turbo feeding the engine. This is best done by cutting the elbow boost pipe or unscrewing the clips from it. This will kill the boost and cut of the fuel (oil) supply.

Shirley if it was beginning to runaway on engine oil it would be chucking out bucket loads of smoke?
 
Many thanks for your thoughts guys. As blue beasty says ,shirley ( surely )there would be smoke billowing from the exhaus if oil was being burnt?...but there wasnt' . The engine ran on for around 5/6 minutes before it stopped. no smoke.
Not sure about the ignition switch.Hope it is that tho'..much cheaper and easier to fix! Driving around before all this happened was as normal, no issues...
Well not strictly true...i was having intermittent problems with the door locks not working with the key fob! ( probably not connected)

If it was the ignition switch, all the gauges would be active while the engine was running. If they all shut off, it's not the switch.
 
How long have you had the car? Have you fiddled with any switches lately that you didn't know what they were for? The previous owner didn't install a "turbo timer" by any chance?
 
It would. But I can't see how a TD4 could run on for several minutes, without burning the oil.

I think he meant surly, I always have a plastic bag in my freelander and a knife I would cut the turbo hose and cover it with a plastic bag so it would stop.i saw a car do this once and it was not a pretty sight.
