have to agree with Mark L there though, I would have a couple of trackers in that just in case they find one, especially if I was going to park it anywhere near S Yorks.
Gutted for you....my son had his Defender stolen from outside his house overnight about two months ago just outside Chesterfield. No trace since but he kept checking on e bay as the brand new winch was quite distinctive. He saw one identical to it on e bay been offered for sale at a fraction of its true cost but he did n't follow it up due to his work commitments. Seller lived in Dorset.

Somebody on the LandyWatch facebook page also made a fair point that Twisted are on the Skytag-GPS tracker website as an authorised agent, so it seems mad that they didn't put some form of extra security on the vehicle. At the moment though, we're waiting for the owner to give us an update on the security on the vehicle as it could well have been fully loaded on security.... (and still nicked

I believe that a standard MY2012 Defender should have a battery backed up alarm sounder fitted as standard. Okay, not impossible to beat but better than what was previously fitted.

should have reported it to the police, when mine was nicked it was full of tools, i spotted a post hole borer for sale on ebay that was identical to mine and the plant number that was engraved on it was visible in the photo.
Had to kick up a fuss but eventually the police went and got i back for me, unsurprisingly the seller was living on a pikey camp in Leicestershire. Equally unsurprisingly, he found it, honest officer, just lying at the side of the road, as you do. least i got my post hole borer back though.

Update from owner....
Interesting that cos' I suspected pikeys for my sons theft. They travel all over so Dorset was no surprise to me. What made the winch so interesting was that it was sold together with its 'other' parts which included a piece of kit not sold with the winch but which my son had added to it.
How long ago was it up for sale? i think the ebay auctions stay on line for about 3 months after they've ended, if the listing page is still live the police can find out who the buyer and seller are.
The thinking is that the majority of the vehicles stolen go for export either to Africa or Eastern Europe. The criminal gangs that do this will probably have some sort of legitimate export business as well that acts as a cover or front. Whoever's running the business isn't doing the nicking though, they're paying petty criminals to go out and steal them to order, one would imagine they're paid so much for each motor, anything of value inside the vehicle will be a bonus, likewise things like winches probably don't make any difference to the amount they get paid, but they're worth money, so they take them off and sell them.

Interesting post.
Tracker all the way then if you want to stand a chance of getting it back.
It would be interesting to know how many fitted with trackers are subsequently recovered.

I had a quick look back through all the LandyWatch reported thefts and the info isn't much help I'm afraid.
Sadly not every poster gives us security measures info but trackers were only mentioned three times to date.
In one instance, the thieves tried to nick the truck, were beaten but the disklok so just nicked the doors and bonnet instead, so the tracker wasn't called into action,
One other instance, the tracker was providing location data right up to the point it was discovered and ripped out. Plod arrived at the last tracker coords minutes too late....
The final instance, nothing more is mentioned other than it had a tracker fitted....
