.....................if it was that bent how did he get the engine on it? Or were you thinking something else?
I was thinking that if it is straight enough to go back together, then it's very unlikely to be that - unless he managed to reverse the GB and injun together in exactly the same plane (pah!)* - so I was wondering if the clutch works properly which hopefully rules out any issue with the input shaft....

* whilst not impossible, it is highly improbable

Here's a picture of one of my old pistons. You can see that the bowl is offset towards the injectors so that the injector can reach it more easily.

The pistons are marked with an arrow which points to the front of the engine. ie timing belt end You might be able to see it on the picture above. Here is a close up.

I think the piston tops can get sooty and make it difficult to see the markings.

I didn't check it, I saw there was no damage to the pressure plate fingers, which are no where near as strong as the shaft and didn't think too much of it.

If that was the case I'd of thought it would be a constant vibration, but this is worse sometimes than otbers

I don't know how common a bent input shaft is. I'd guess pretty rare and now I know how tricky it can be to get everything lined up accurately enough for it it slide together, then I would agree with you.
@Riich Did you remember to put the thrust washer back in?

Ive noticed something else tonight, again possibly unrelated. When coming to a stop, if I coast out of gear foot on the brake and off the clutch, engine idling, as soon as it comes to a complete stop (foot still on the brake) there is a very slight change in engine note

On the crank jurnal? Yes
Yep, that's what I was thinking. It's a mystery. :(
Clutching at straws a bit now........gear box mounts. I can't remember, did you replace them or might you coincidentally have one worse for wear?

Thank you very much Sir. I'm yet to have one apart. Disco is currently on its second engine. Looking at rebuilding my old one which was swapped out when it just about lost all compression at around 33K on the clock.

With regards to this mystery vibration, long shot here, but all bellhousing bolts holding engine and box in place and fully tightened?

All compression in every cylinder?

Decent shout, that.

Thanks Disco1.

I might have found the problem - head gasket blowing at the rear. I checked that already and even did a compression test! I can feel it on my hand when I get in behind.

Watch this space...

Well done. :)
What make of gasket did you use?

OK, this might seem like a daft question, but please bear with me and humour me due to my rapidly advancing years ...
Have you checked that your vacuum pump is working correctly?

I changed the gasket last Friday and it seemed to make an improvement. There was still a very slight vibration, but nothing like it was before. I put some miles in over the weekend and all was good, but Monday morning when I left for work the vibration was back. WTF is it?!

Right, I changed the vac pump but it made no difference. The only difference with it is I now have a rythmical ticking noise which sounds like its coming from it?

I also changed the lift pump and steel fuel lines from the injection pump to the injectors. When I fired it back up the idle was way too low, so had to adjust it back to possibly what it was originaly at. Anyway, apart from the idle being a fraction high now, it feels much better, but I'll report back in a couple of days...

Did this come with a dual mass fly wheel (harmonic balancer built onto the flywheel) recommendation by LR change every 100,000. Kilometers
