Hi we own a freelander 1.8 petrol s reg and it's developed a problem with the gears 80% of the time they are fine but if you do several short trips the gears stiffen to the point where the only way you can select 1st gear is to turn the engine off and put it into 1st this doesn't solve the problem just allows you to get home. I seems to be worse when its the weather is hotter. I've taken it to a garage and they seem to think it could be that it has had the wrong gear oil put in it and when it heats up the oil is thickening? I'm not to sure that i agree with this theory. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

try changing the gearbox oil and while your at it change the ird oil as well. did mine last weekend, the oil in both looked like drinking chocolate bwhen it came out and only has 65k on the clock.

The problem is the clutch and slave cylinder goes faulty ive changed mine for 60 quid off ebay only took 30 mins to changed and its like driving a different car now ive done it.

Also worth changing the slave cylinder bracket only cost around £8, as its been said before I have changed the cylinders & the bracket and its like a new car!!

Its the head gasket. It always is.

Failing that is the VCU OK cos winding up the transmission would tighten up the box.

Just read the thread again

The oil thickens when it gets hot!!!!!!!!!!! What!!!!!!!!!!

Now some smart arse is going to come on here and say that there are lots of oils that do that.

Nah most ov em do the opposite:)

When you say stiff, do you mean its crunching into gear or just loads of resistance?

As already mentioned:

grease the linkage points, esp the ball/socket on the gearstick itself, just lift the rubber gaitors.

The release arm on the clutch can seize, just where it goes into the gearbox bell housing.

Check the 'seating' and housing of the slave cylinder. They are plastic and flimsy retaining clips.

Someone on here said about 'packing out' the push rod, place a 5mm packer into the socket of the release arm.

Someone else drilled the bolt holes on the slave cylinder mounting bracket itself, this allows movement of the slave cylinder to the left.

Maybe an gear oil change might do the trick, although with the OP at 45k I am not convinced it is the oil.
MTF94 is the same viscosity as 10/40w engine oil, only it has friction modifiers in it (and other stuff).
Some mechanics cut corners and just fill with any old oil.

If all that fails, then come back and wll talk fork selectors and gearbox internals ;)
