I have exactly the same problem. gears become almost impossible to engage or disengage. have to let the car cool down before it returns to "normal"
I would love to know how to resolve this as my mechanic suggested changing the entire gearbox!

only thing I can think of

I already told ya what to check, esp the clutch release arm going into the gearbox bell housing. Get it lubed with penetrating fluid

I have a 2001 TD4 with just this problem - the service guy claims the linkage is not the problem, he's disconnected it and it moves freely. There are issues with the hydraulics - problem is, reassembling it to see if that was all is expensive. The costs so far have just about written the car off! Hopefully, if nobody else has an answer, I will find it and/or go broke in the attempt.

Hi we own a freelander 1.8 petrol s reg and it's developed a problem with the gears 80% of the time they are fine but if you do several short trips the gears stiffen to the point where the only way you can select 1st gear is to turn the engine off and put it into 1st this doesn't solve the problem just allows you to get home. I seems to be worse when its the weather is hotter. I've taken it to a garage and they seem to think it could be that it has had the wrong gear oil put in it and when it heats up the oil is thickening? I'm not to sure that i agree with this theory. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?
I know this is a while ago, but did you resolve this problem? My much loved Freelander, 2002 1.8 petrol model has just developed the same problem? Hot engine, traffic build up, and then first, second and third gears stiffen to the point of forcing them. Could it be deterioration of the clutch? Let me know if you found the solution please?

were can i get a gearbox for freelander 1 an how much am i lookin at to get fitted approx

Hi Paul, you need to start a new thread with your question (top left button). This old thread is about clutches. ;)
