Hello everyone, I'm looking for some help please. This is my first Land Rover which I bought about 2 months ago and I'm not a mechanic. (The limit of my expertise is to change hoses, crankcase breather and EGR valve.)
The clutch on my 2006 Freelander Td4 is stiff to push down. I only need to depress the clutch pedal about half an inch to engage gears which I can without any problems.
However - with my head in the engine bay and my wife pushing the clutch pedal up and down - I can hear a squeak which I think is coming from inside the gearbox and probably the slave cylinder.
Any ideas what may be happening and what I should do about it please.
Thanks,
Joe

If it's got around 90K on the clock, then it's likely the clutch is on its last legs.

Hi joe I to had the same problem however my freelander is petrol. and were the slave cylinder is I just sprayed mine with wd40/penetration oil and it worked a treet, just see if it works mate , just spray on the push rod on the slave cylinder . hope this helps

Hi Nodge, It's got 71K on the clock and I thought the clutch might be giving up but was hoping someone would tell me different :(
It's likely the clutch is at the end of its life.
That's about the mileage they start to fail at, especially if used round town, for towing or off road use.

TD4 is a completely different system to the K series. ;)

Hi Satnav, My slave cylinder apparently is inside the clutch housing (Haynes manual) and isn't accessible so I don't think I can use WD40.
Thanks

Nodge, My guess is that replacing a clutch is difficult job. Is it possible to do it on the driveway or am I going to have to take it to a garage?
Any ideas what cost it might be? Thanks.

I could do it on my drive, no problem. However it's a long, labour intensive job.
I've seen people pay between £500 to over £1000 for a clutch change. The parts can be about £400 if the flywheel needs changing too.

Mine failed last week 98 on the clock, it's been getting progressively heavier over the last year.

mines the same with 83k, on the clock. Hoping it will last a few more mnths till I can sell the Transit and buy a second hippo for the other half.
