Yes, a stupid and simple question, but i am still going to ask it . On a '87 90 interior, how would you remove the stereo cage? Current radio transmits engine sound and things through speakers . Need new one. But cant see anyway of removing it apart from the two plastic 'things' at the back of the surround. Do you just pop them out or what? Cheers. :doh:. Would have had a go but didnt want to ruin anything.

Most radio fittings have a plastic surround, that pops off, to make it look nice, behind that is a metal box that actually holds the radio. It's held in by having some of the side tags bent back so they grip the opening. The radio itself is normally held in this box by a couple of sprung tags and needs a tool (or credit card) slid in the gap at the side to release it, then just pull it out. You may have to destroy the metal cage to get it out, but they are a standard size and can be bought at any boy racer shop.

Alright, bit more info than I needed but that is better than to little! Thanks. Just that to change it to a normal ISO connection I need to remove the cage to get the loom.

when ive done this in the past i get a tiny flat screw driver and bend back all the little tabs so that theyre pointing into the inside of the surround. theres usually only 4 that people bother with when installing.

2 at the top about an inch in from each corner, bent outwards and back to grip the fascia of the dash, and 2 directly below those on the bottom gripping the dash.

if you dont mind wrecking the cage, just get a large flat screwdriver and bend the middle of the bottom of the cage inwards, this makes the whole cage kinda collapse on itself, you can then see all the tabs, or pull it straight out if nothing is gripping.

To get to the loom all you need do is take the surround off then release the radio, pull it out and there's the plugs/wires at the back.

Yes, thats what I mean the cage / surround - the only things i can see securing it are to the dash are the little plastic button / pins at the back (on the outside of the surround). Do they just pop out with a bit of force?

I am pretty sure you have to take the dashboard top off as it has a tab along the top that the surround sits under

Yes, luckily, that tab has been overlapping the outside of the dash so I dont have to remove dash

It may also be worth checking the suppressor on the back of the alternator has not corroded and the wire broken off, as you may fit a nice flash new stereo only to find it still picks up a lovely howl/whine from the alternator, there should be a little plastic "box" type unit about 10mm x10mm x 5mm with a little black wire coming off it and onto a spade terminal in the back of the alternator, they commonly break either at the spade terminal or where the wire goes into the "box" you can get replacements from most decent car parts factors or lucas uk if you have one near you. (you may find that there is a tin plate on the back of the alternator which is supposed to stop excess heat and sh*t from damaging the wires and connectors which has to be removed first, this can also sometimes rub through the suppressor wire and cause problems, Hope this is of help Mark

This would only come through when using the radio surely though? or not? I dont really use the radio - ipod / cds
