Hello I am new to the Forum and was hoping for some assistance.

Have a 1997 discovery1 V8 auto, a re-import from japan with 52,000 miles .My problem is the steering can wander a bit,on previous advice I have repalce all steering track rods , replaced the bushes ,new shock absorbers all round and had the geometry checked but still much the same .

Can anyone help with what is spoiling what is otherwise a fabulous vehicle.

Regards

John

when does it wander on what roads and at what sort of speeds. Also have you replaced the steering damper.

Hi,

New steering damper ,tyre pressures as per manual and generally on a straight road.

on what roads
This is a really good question. In the main, mine is excellent but on some roads that have heavy truck traffic it wiggles about a bit due to the compression of the road thus causing ridges in the asphalt surface. Made worse over here of course when its 47 degrees and the road gets soft, but happens a lot on freeways and main roads even down south.

If you hold either of the front wheels at the 3 & 9 oclock position or 3 & 12 can you feel any play whilst trying to rock backwards and forwards?

If so wheel bearings need nipping up/replacing or swivel preload needs adjusting!

yer not wrong its like driving on the worlds longest cattle grid on some of them

Wheel bearings might be the cause, replaced mine (1994 300 TDi) in August. Made a difference to the steering. Not a difficult job to check and adjust front bearings.
