The steering box seems ok when turning the wheel, the sound is actually more like a groaning noise, sometimes very pronounced and sometimes very quiet. Yesterday when I took it out it was dead quiet until I got back home, seems to be one of those things! I have googled it and it appears that this is not uncommon with the P38 and seems to be always left hand related....
Related to roundabouts?!

I'm the one groaning at roundabouts usually, it always seems to be at slow speeds,(car parks, left turns etc) having said that, I guess I wouldn't be turning the wheel so far at 60mph

Just an update, after doing all sorts I have now tried the Lucas power steering leak/squeal stop additive. I took all of the regular fluid out and poured the bottle of additive (well, pour is a bad description, the stuff is like molasses in a snowstorm) The noise has diminished considerably, the write ups say it can take a while for it to fully work, I am happy with the near silent left turns now though!!!

Another update, after a couple of weeks using the Lucas stuff the many years of the steering moaning at me has now ceased, what a result. It is so quiet now I am getting nervous!! The steering even feels better

Did you replace all the fluid in the reservoir, or also all the hoses and steering itself?
Easier to turn?The steering even feels better
Edit: I'm having a similar issue with my Discovery 2. Is your power steering pump clean? And did you have any residue in the reservoir like me?

That's how it looks when I drained the fluid out from the power steering fluid reservoir.

I flushed the whole system, loads of crap came out! Since putting in the Lucas stuff no more noises and yes, steering is easier so a win. Makes such a psychological difference to not have the steering moan at you when turning left! Just have to get rid of the moans from the passenger seatIs that the fluid in the bottom of the filler neck

Any caught in any filters/reservoirs that needed extra elbow grease?
Maybe it was flushing the system that fixed it, not the new fluid?
Black stuff like that?

I have flushed it before hoping to end the noise but no joy so definitely the Lucas stuff, I have tried other fluids also but the noise stayed.

No metal just brown shellac from years of use, the filter was a bit gooey too. All nice and clean now
It's amazing how many vehicles don't have the fluid changed and sometimes if there is no damage it can make a big difference!!
