I might be imagining it but I 'think' a little more steering wheel play than usual on my 1994 Defender 90 300 TDi

Both lower steering UJs feel fine, but the collapsible shaft (Part RTC 4738) 'appears' to have a little rotational movement between the two parts

Does this part wear and allow additional movement or am I imagining it guys?

Decided to order new steering shaft and UJs while at it - seems silly to skimp and frustrating to find UJs are worn once they're out

Just wasn't sure what 'normal' is - found loads of threads on the UJs but nothing on the shaft itself!

SH do you have a video of the movement, I have the exact same issue in my 1994 300TDI, however I simply put the rotational play down to the bottom UJ. Now you have me worried

Sorry - nope. Wouldn't know how to

When i turn the steering wheel from outside the Landy whilst looking at the stering shaft, it's like a slight delay before the bottom section turns when the top one is moving if that makes sense

I've grabbed hold of it either side and there's a slight wobble i think

Probably no more than 4 or 5 degrees of slack, but i'm noticing it when driving

i just replaced my ujs on the steering and it solved the problem,also tweak up the worm drive.

i doubt that the play is in the shaft....

SH, I have the same problem, I put it down to the lower UJ on the steering shaft. I tend to agree with MB that it is unlikely that the Shaft itself is at fault. I have a thread on the go Play in Steering have a look mate, I think we have the same problem.

its not hard to find out either watch shaft whilst someone rocks steering wheel or better hold both sides of joint at the same time ,its not common but i have come across worn shaft joints before

Reason I ordered the 2 ujs and shaft was just to replace the lot (ujs are cheap) in one go rather than mess about

Will be a couple of weeks before I can fit as tied up rebuilding stables after storm damage next week

Will update post afterwards

How did it go sir.?! Once you removed the shaft was there excessive if any play.?

Once I have this ruddy knee brace removed I'm replacing both UJs with these nice new Allmakes ones which I have sadly allowed to sat in the box for the last month.

It was for once a quick and easy job!

Spreading the ujs slightly with a chisel and copper grease helped them slide on the shafts

Not that much play when removed, but replaced along with new ujs and the power steering pump adjusted slightly has made a noticeable improvement
