My car a 2010 Range Rover 3.6 TD V8 has just passed MOT and when I hit it back I noticed the steering fluid was very low in the reservoir. After topping up I rang my garage to get it booked in to have the steering rack checked. They said yes it’s got a leak from the rack and we need a new one at £2000. My question is on the MoT do they have to check the power steering aggressively so as to make it leak. Do they have a special test for it. I think that the leak has occurred only after it went for a MOT check, has anyone had the same problems

Burn your robbing garage to the ground with flammable stuff in the first instance...then consider setting about yourself with alarming brutality using one/both of your hands,
in degrees of clenchness that that befits a lame blank cheque writer.

I have never seen any aggressive power steering checks on the MOT.
£2K sounds like a rip off.

I've seen a couple of l322's with slight leaks on the rack. They'd be more concerned with the rust:p

I have had my 2008 L322 SC at the dealers for over 2 weeks trying to get my rear suspension vibration diagnosed and fixed. One thing they commented on was a leak from my steering rack and suggested I change it for a mere $5,000 CAD. Not going to happen considering I can buy a rebuilt one for $500 and power steering fluid is relatively cheap.

Thanks for your replies the thing that I can’t get to grips with is the steering rack was not reported on MOT but 2 days later it needed nearly a pint of AVF, and now it goes down very slightly each day I check it. Is there any stuff I can buy that will seal up my tiny leak?

Maybe a just a coincidence? As you say the atf was already low when you got it back. It is a common problem and she's not a lightweight car. ;)
