Hi all,
Just fishing for info here - been searching and calling up scrappy for an new (used) power steering pump - one has one but not for a few days (probably will take longer !)
Anyway - the pumps seems fine but the pully shaft bearings have gone - they are clearly visible from underneath which is what the smoke was id hazard a guess when I was half way through the journey home when I bought it - must have seized up and smoked the belt for a bit .
What id like to know is whether the steering pump is the same on the disco 200 tdi and if there are differences what are they ?
I have been searching on here and all over but info is eluding me. haynes and LR workshop manuals dont have any details either - just curious if anyone knows?

They are indeed the same pump. The only difference between the Discovery and the Defender setup is the mounting / position of the pump. On the Defender, it sits lower down on the right hand side of the engine, where as on the Disco it sits slightly higher up. It's all due in part to a differentiation between the Discovery / Defender timing case and the support bracket (necessary for the fitting of different intake / exhaust manifolds on both engine configurations). Either way, you should have the bracket in place that is specific to your vehicle, so it will not make any difference whether you source a pump from a Disco or a Defender.

mine failed this week, I hunted around for a used one and in the end bit the bullet and bought new. £180 inc VAT.

Nope disco and def pas pumps are different, defender one has a much longer nose assy, which is why i had to buy a new one for 175 quid when there are **** loads of cheap disco ones about for 20/30 pounds.
NTC8288 is for disco and range rover 200tdi.

Hmmm,

Looking a the two different models of pump specific to the 200tdi engine on lrseries does show a couple of differences. The Defender specific model has the pump to box union sat on the back of the pump, where as the pump which states it will fit both disco and defender models has the pump to box union on the side of the pump. I imagine in the case of the pump which is suited to both vehicles (more than likely just Disco / Rangie classic) the union will foul the chassis. That said, I have a 200tdi disco engine sat in my 90 with the disco pump and there is plenty of room for the pipework. I do ofcourse have the discovery mounting bracket which is sat a little higher than that on the Defender version. I stand corrected!

Mine looks more like this one: part no: NTC8287
NTC8287 200TDI POWER STEERING PUMP ASSEMBLY | Defender 1985>: Major Units | shop | www.lrseries.com | L. R. Series

it also says it will fit the 2.5 NA Diesel, 2.5 Turbo diesel engines!

This one that has Part No: NTC9070
Steering Pump for Land Rover DEFENDER (NOT NAS) 200Tdi NTC8287, NTC9070 - all

3rd one down the page has a fitments check that states it will fit a 200tdi engine in a defender but the curved pipe would seem to get in the way of or very near the engine mounts on mine - the date is 92 onwards so must be a change to the layout after that date

hopefully you can see why I am curious about this....

Thanks for all the replies

Lyndon - wish I had a lathe or room for one :)
