Hey guys,

Right I know I have seen this somewhere on here but not sure where.

Have noticed that when stationary the steering turns smooth and with ease as it should but when driving sometimes the steering goes heavy but then frees up and ALSOooooo when turning whilst moving the steering goes lumpy.

So any ideas guys

Mine does similar at times - I thought is might be an Airlock - but JamesMartin and others have said the box self bleeds with a flow and return so any air locks are removed....

My only other guess is a slipping drive belt or dodgy pressure releif valve on the PAS Pump - possible sticky ball joints too....

Do you have RAVE??

D/L from land rover service factory manual RAVE download land rover resource, service manual, workshop factory manual, download, rave, vehicles including discovery, series, defender, range rover, freelander, LR3, Handbooks, Catalog, Catalogue, Land Rover Inte

I was gonna post the Steering system Operation on here, but it is quite a few pages and will take for ever to image and post....

Get RAVE and go to the System Description & Operation manual, it details how the Servotronic system works depending on Road Speed - it could be that that is playing up...

Basically it takes the road speed from the ABS system and the Servotronic system varis steering input assistance to match the road speed....

Haven't raved for a few years now lol.

Now if that runs off the ABS that adds another little Spanner in the works because once in a while when I break it's feels like its grinding which is obviously the ABS so I wonder if that is playing up

Are you getting a pumping through the brake pedal - as this is the ABS system modulating brake pressure...if it is just a grinding noise you are getting for feeling through the steering wheel - are your brake pads OK???
